My interview with Writers Manual!
The Life of Your Writer...
Tell us a bit about yourself. What would you like us to know about you?
My life isn't all that exciting. I live for my family and my God. I want to be the person He created me to be. The person I know I can be. I love being around my loved ones. I love babies and try to take over my nieces and nephews. One of my nieces even used to call me 'Mama Cindy'. But I have no children of my own.
What are you doing now?
I am single and have never been married. No Children. I write whenever I can because I love writing. I have two adorable kittens; one orange and the other black named 'Sunrise' and 'Midnight'.
What is your favorite...
Food: Spaghetti
Color: Mauve and dusty rose together
Sound: Quiet! hehe. Really, the rain falling on the roof
Taste: Chocolate
Person: My Mother Place: Anywhere warm. I
Place: Anywhere warm - I hate being cold
Memory: Christmas at my Grandma and Grandpa's
Article of clothing: My worn-out Jeans
Word: Peace or love
What is your favorite quote and why?
"How can you fail if you never quit?" These words helped me through many hard times while growing up. In the midst of put-downs and doubts about myself, my Mother held me strong with these words. When you're 12-years-old and still can't read, write, or make it past the third grade...when even your special education teachers fill you full of doubt, it takes a special kind of person to bring you out of all that. That person was my Mother. Her words hit me and I realized how valuable self determination is. No one is going to force learning on you. No one is going to force success on you. You have to go get it for yourself. It just depends on how bad you want it.
What is your most favorite quality about yourself?
That I listen to things that are good and I run from things that are bad. I really pay attention to older people and always have. I realize how wise they are and I never try to brush off their advice. They have been through the storms of life; they know. Like I've heard it said, 'if you want to know how to grow corn, don't ask the one who has just a little nubbin in his barn. Go to the one who's barn is overflowing'.
What is your least favorite quality about yourself?
Sometimes I get caught up in my own wants and desires. Then I forget to pray, or I just work and work and work till I fall in bed without giving God time. I really get upset at myself for that.
If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
I used to want to go to Jerusalem because it is the Holy land. But now, with all the fighting and bloodshed over there, I think God can make wherever I am His holy ground. So, I'll just go to Hawaii where it's nice, warm, and peaceful.
Your Writer's Perspective...
What inspires you to write and why?
I guess because deep down I'm a control freak. I can move the characters however I want. The world is open to me. Whatever I want to make happen happens. It's really a great power. Yet, sometimes the characters do try to take over and do their own thing.
What is your favorite genre to write and why?
History. I love anything historic. I love the old simple times when a child had fun building roads in the dirt or making mud pies. Now a child can have a room full of toys and computer games and be 'bored'.
What is your favorite book and why?
Virginia Dare. As a child I carried this one book with me all day, every day, for two years until I could read it without stumbling and tripping over the words. Today I still have that book. It is very special to me and by far my favorite.
List your three favorite authors (any genre) and why?
L.M. Montgomery, who wrote the 'Anne of Green Gables' series. She was just a great writer. I fell in love with her series.
Margaret Mitchell, who wrote 'Gone With The Wind'. When you can write like her, all you need to write is one.
John Grisham. His writings are so captivating. I also like him because he's from my own home state. My favorite work of his is the 'Pelican Brief'.
What do you think makes a writer successful?
Being able to take criticism. Recognizing when you have not done your best and being able to suck it up and go back to the drawing board. You don't have to throw out your whole work if it doesn't seem right. Work with it till it does. Don't be afraid to toss out a chapter or two to save the entire novel.
What is it that makes you successful as a writer?
Never giving up. It's that simple.
A Writer's Journey...
What are your goals as a writer?
The sky's the limit. I want it all. I want to reach as high as I can. I'd love to see my novels made into movies, sold world wide. Maybe even a few #1 best sellers. You know, 'the works'. :-)
What is the best tip you can give to fellow writers?
Again. Never give up. Write and rewrite. Submit and re-submit. Stay in there and fight for your dreams. If you want to be a writer. Be a writer.
What do you hope to provide your readers with through your writing?
I want my readers, when they turn the last page of my book, to be left with a feeling of peace, hope, and love. To feel that they read something worth their time...something they'd want their family and friends to read.
List your three favorite online writer-resource sites?
Merriam-Webster online, http://www.m-w.com/ It's very useful for me. When I'm not sure of a word I just go type it in and there it is.
http://www.writers.com Writers on the Net offers Online Writing Classes, free tips and More. I haven't spent much time there but I liked what I saw. That's about it for that though. I don't have three.
Tell us about your publishing success (book title, genre, publishing date, publishing company or self-publishing)
My first literary novel 'Sometimes There's A Dove' has been published by Twilight Times Books. The work takes the readers on a journey with a young girl, 'Clair' and her family from the Delta lands of Mississippi to the atom bomb plant inside a hidden and secret city in Tennessee at the time of global war. Where the realization comes that peace, love and safety hold far more wealth than all the riches of Utopia.
How long did it take you to write your book(s) and why?
Well, I started 'Sometimes There's A Dove' when I was 16-years-old along with a dozen more. It's been in the works for 12 years now. I didn't know beans about writing then except that I liked it. I have re-worked them all so many times they are hardly recognizable from the first drafts. 'Sometimes There's A Dove' was the first novel I ever attempted to have published. I was offered two contracts for it but turned them down hoping for better things. I think I've found that in Twilight Times Publications.
What would you do differently if you had to repeat the same publishing experience?
I don't suppose I'd do anything differently. I am happy where these roads have lead me. I have grown so much as a writer through every experience I've had. I hope to grow even more.
What have you learned about the publishing world through your experience?
That it's hard to break into. If you're an unknown, your biggest trial is getting anyone to even read your work. But you have to keep up the hope that you will come across the one looking for a 'fresh face'...a new outlook. The one willing to take a chance. The breaks are few and far between, but they are out there.
Your Writer's Response...
This is your chance to "Talk-Back" to your readers. What would you like to say to them?
To everyone who reads 'Sometimes There's A Dove' I just want to thank you. I hope you enjoy every word of it. I hope it takes you away from the test and trials of life and leaves you with a good feeling. I want you to know you are important to me, and that I write every story with the highest quality and respect for you. Thank you.
What's the one thing that you want them to know about your writing?
That it is written for them to enjoy.
