Music is an interesting subject for me. In the past two years, I have recently come to discover that I like an odd form of music. For years, I haven't been inspired by music, most everything seemed bland on the radio. Every once in a while, I'd hear a song I liked, but to truly LOVE a song, it was rare. Growing up, I listened to Depeche Mode. I would buy every album, and I know most of the songs by heart to this day. Being raised in Ga., It seems that nobody else shared my love. Depeche Mode in the late 80's was all electronica which was odd for it's time. However, their music seemed to be more on the "dark side" with titles such as "Black Celebration" or "Fly On The Windshield". Both focused on the more darker sides of life. However, in all my research, going to record stores, asking just about everyone I could, everyone would classify it as "techno". Since they did not fully understand my likes or desires, I went in circles listening to one bad techno group after another, and being sadly disappointed.
All this happened for over 10 years!! I thought my taste in music was of only one group, and the rest of my life I would be unmotivated. However things seemed to have changed. I started dating this one girl who considered herself "goth". Now, I don't consider myself a "goth", nor have I ever. I listened to some of the music she listened to, and found it to be a bit too morose for me for the most part. However, I got curious one day and visited her ex boyfriends' site, and noticed he had a few songs by VNV Nation. After listening (and downloading) every song on his website, It seemed I found a new passion.... a new type of music that I truly liked. It happened that they were based in Germany, and were doing a tour in the US. Although they didn't play a good live show, it did give me a chance to buy one of their albums. From there, I found Metropolis Records, and started looking at some of the other music they published. It seems I was getting close to finding what "type" of music I listened to. I ran across another band, Assemblage 23 that I liked produced on the same record label. Yes, I became fascinated with those two groups... And wanted MORE... I kept searching and searching. but again, everyone suggested "techno" or "EBM".
Well, It wasn't until I recently came across a site that hosted by a DJ that produces a local show twice a month, Distorted Circuitry. Well, I listened to her show, and it seems that I liked about half of what she played. Seems that I like something called "Futurepop".... Well, That's the closest I have come to date to explain my type of music... I don't like "up-beat" songs, but more on the downside... Maybe I like a version of Futurepop, but from most of what I've been seeing have come close to what I like. I invite you to listen for yourself.
And just as an update.. no longer dating that "girl", and have found these following groups that I truely like:
Assemblage 23, VNV Nation, Covenant, Zeromancer
