In recent years, new kinds of handicrafts has emerged in Singapore and Malaysia. Among the most beautiful are using straws to make various kinds of flowers. Currently it is very popular and can be seen everywhere you go, in the office, at homes and even when you are taking a taxi.
I am putting up this page to inform people outside Malaysia and Singapore to inform them of the richness of the handicraft scene here. I believe them to be new as I have not seen them used in this manner previously and I have been interested in all kinds of handicraft since I was young. By the way, this is a great way to re-cycle your drinking straws. There is some cutting and some threading involve and I will not be showing how it is done. I do not know who own the copyright to such designs and they are so widespread that it is difficult to find out. |
| In constructing the flowers, in most cases you need plastic calyx, leaves, stalks which should be available at most handicraft stores. There is another tool which looks like a comb but with metal teeth which would be used to comb the straw after cutting them open. The purpose of this tool is to scratch lines on the straw to simulate veins. |
