A Trip to Oz!

Poem by Chris Campbell

A trip was planned 'Down Under' some relatives to see
Several months of planning made by Alex and by me
Finally aboard our plane from Heathrow we did go
To warmer climes (our shorts were packed) from England in the snow

We changed our plane at Shanghai and from there we flew to Oz
A visit to the flight deck was arranged for us because
That day it was my birthday not that everybody knew
But upon that deck was on that night a most spectacular view

In front of us in that night sky the Southern Cross hung low
It really was exciting just to see it so
Alex asked the pilot "what is that constellation there?"
"Oh I don't know mate" he replied as he did peer and stare
"We no longer navigate by stars you see but by this computer here"
So I seldom chance to look at them but they're pretty have no fear"

Once in Oz our time was spent in a very hectic way
So much to see so much to do each minute of the day
The time was spent with cousin Linda and her husband Pete
And on the eve of Christmas day we were out into the street

Again in the Australian sky the Southern Cross shone bright
But what was that above our heads? Orion in our sight
"It looks so very different" I said with face afrown
"But that's because as we all know it's really upside down!"
"It never is" said Peter "that is the right way round"
"It may be right to you Pete but on this I stand my ground!"

A few days on the four of us to Alice did traverse
Then on to Ayers Rock (Ularu) that great monolith on Earth
This piece of rock was wondrous a true sight to behold
Especially at sunset the colours bright and bold

This followed by a desert trip a barbeque surprise
Tables laid out in the sand a sight to please our eyes
A choice of canapés to eat and fish and kangaroo
Champagne to tickle taste buds and we had some emu too

After our fill was taken the lamps were turned right down
The ink black sky enveloped us like a huge black velvet gown
As eyes soon got accustomed all these jewels we did see
Sparkling in the heavens so very small were we

It made us feel so humble and privileged to be there
So beautiful was the universe one could only stand and stare

An astronomer amongst us was to point out various stars
The Magellanic Clouds we viewed, we could have looked for hours
Above us once again, Orion on this gown
"Take notice" the astronomer said, Orion upside down

Back home to England cold once more
Hot tea within a cup
We turned our gaze to see once more Orion THE RIGHT WAY UP!
