Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series - although not the greatest
literature is enjoyable fluff. The Series beginning with the novel On a Pale Horse (probably
the best of the bunch) explaining the existence of the incarnations and
how one lands the "office" of Death. The Series Continues in a
similar manner with the personal tales of the current office holders of
the incarnations of Time (Bearing an Hourglass), Fate (With a
Tangled Skein), War (Wielding a Red Sword), Nature (Being
a Green Mother), God (And Eternity), and Evil (For the Love
of Evil), while the continuing story line progresses towards the final
battle between Good and Evil.

R. Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever is a fascinating
set of two trilogies beginning when the leprous anti-hero, Thomas Covenant,
loses consciousness and awakens in another world where he is believed (because
of his wedding band) to be the long-awaited white gold bearer who will save
the world from destruction. Mordant's Need is a series of two novels, Mirror
of Her Dreams and A Man Rides Through each dealing with Terisa
Morgan, the neglected daughter of rich parents who has the habit of peering
into mirrors to reassure herself of her own existence. One day a man emerges
from the mirror she is peering into. In his world mirrors are not used to
see one's reflection but rather are tools of magicians. Believing Terisa
to be a powerful magician, he convinces her to return with him to save his
world.

Feist's Riftwar Saga consists of two excellent trilogies. The first
three books, Magician, Silverthorn and Darkness at Sethanon
deal with the land of Midkemia, a Tolkeinesque land which has been invaded
by the Tsurani, a strange warlike race of invaders from another world. In
the midst of this war, Pug - who as an orphan apprenticed to a sorcerer
and having become a master magician as a captive of the Tsurani- and his
childhood friend, Thomas - who becomes consort to the Elf Queen - must join
forces in the ancient struggle agaisnt an evil enemy older than time itself.
The second Trilogy, Daughter of the Empire, Servant of the Empire
and Mistress of the Empire written with Janie Wurts deals with events
on the exotic, metalless Tsurani homeworld, Kelewan, whose culture is inspired
by that of ancient Korea. The young Tsurani Mara who must overcome great
political and personal struggles to lead her people to safety.
Azrael has
chosen The Riftwar Saga as her choice for July's

Janny Wurts' The Master of White Storm, a story about an escaped
galley slave turned mercenary didn't start out well. After the main character
Korendir manages to escape slavery and successfully overcome several series
of adventures including fights against sorceresses, wereleopards and weather elementals,
we were disappointed that we didn't care what happened to this guy and weren't
terribly interested in what he would do next. We did, however, read further and
sure enough, Wurts finally managed to capture our attention with the psychological
depths of this amazing protagonist. She also creates companions who are equally
interesting. So, if you enjoy adventure and you've got a little bit of
patience...we would recommend this novel highly.
