| Along with studies and classes and homework, annual
events form an integral part of school life. The St. Columba School follows this example
having several annual events in which the students play an important role.
The Prefects' PlayEvery year in December start the elections for the Head Girl, the two Secretaries, the House Captains and Vice-Captains, and the Prefects for the next year. Each prefect is allotted a class which she is in charge of for the next whole year. All the elected candidates, except the Head Girl are allotted classes of which they become Prefects. On the 4th of September every year, is the annual "Prefects' Play" function, where each class presents a drama or a play directed by their prefect. The Prefect is in complete charge and has to do everything, from choosing the characters, to making the sets etc. The whole programme is completely organised by the students, especially the prefects. And, there are prizes to be won as well...
Teacher's Day5th September is always celebrated as "Teacher's Day". In school, on this day, the Head Girl and the prefects teach the school, while the teachers take a break. After school is over, the teachers and the prefects, along with a few volunteers stay back. Then the teachers are given a party by the students! In the party, along with food and drinks, the teachers are also given gifts for all of their efforts in making us, the students, a better lot. Like the Prefects' Play, this programme is also completely organised by the students under the leadership of the prefects and the Head Girl.
The Fun-FairLike the name says, it is a Fun-Fair, a sort of carnival with food, drink and ice-cream stalls (tons of them), games stalls, dance floor and music requests, and plenty of fun stuff. This fun-fair usually occupies the whole of the school campus, that is, right from the basketball court to the tennis court. This carnival is open to all, and usually goes on from 3:00 in the afternoon to 10:00 in the night. Each class, with the help of the class-teacher puts up a food-stall or a drink-stall with the colunteers working in shifts. The whole school is filled to the brim with people on that day, with school students, as well as outsiders coming to have a good time. The money made in this carnival is used to introduce new facilities for the school and the students. But more than that, its just great fun.
PicnicsEvery year, every class from the kindergarten to the 10th grade, are taken for a picnic or an excursion for one day by the school. Each class goes to a different place where they are given to opportunity to spend time with the teachers and friends. Picnics are times when there are no rules, no scoldings, no punishments and no studies! Except for the 9th grade, all the other picnics are one-day picnics. The 9th grade is taken for an overnight trip lasting between 7-14 days anywhere out of Mumbai. The 9th grade trip is probably the best excursion for the students, because it is a time when they are able to spend completely with their friends, classmates and teachers. In my 9th grade, our class was taken to Aurangabad, the home of the famous Ajanta and Ellora Caves.
