All rights reserved.]</B></div> <bR> <div> <U>CHAPTER 6</U></div> <bR> <div> <B>The  Divine Bestowal of Authority</B></div> <bR> <div>      Jesus can speak in the first person the words of the Father and angels can speak in the first person a message from either the Father or Son.  Jesus represents the Father (has a power of attorney).  Reaction to him is a direct reaction to the Father (John  5:47;  10:25; 3 Ne  20:35;  28:10; D&C  50:43).  Many times in the Scriptures we find man, angel, God, Jesus and the Father interchangeable. For example:</div> <bR> <div>   (1) <B>Gen </B><FONT SIZE="2" COLOR="#000000" FACE="Arial" > </FONT><B>16:7,11,13-14</B> And <I>the angel of the LORD</I> found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur ...  And <I>the angel of the LORD said</I> unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son and shall call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hast heard thy affliction ...  <I>And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God</I> seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me? Wherefore the well was called <I>Beer-lahai-roi; </I>behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.<FONT SIZE="1" COLOR="#000000" FACE="Arial" >1</FONT></div> <bR> <div>   (2) <B>Gen </B><FONT SIZE="2" COLOR="#000000" FACE="Arial" > </FONT><B>18:1-3,13,16,22,33</B> And <I>the LORD</I> appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day; And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, <I>three men stood by him:</I> and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground, And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant ...  And <I>the LORD</I> said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old? ...  And <I>the men rose up </I>from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way ...  And<I> the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD</I> ...  And <I>the LORD </I>went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.</div> <bR> <div>   (3) <B>Gen </B><FONT SIZE="2" COLOR="#000000" FACE="Arial" > </FONT><B>19:1-2,12,15-16,18-22</B> And <I>there came two angels </I>to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground; And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night ...  And <I>the men </I>said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place ...  And when the morning arose, then <I>the angels</I> hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. And while he lingered, <I>the men</I> laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city ...  And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord: Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die: Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live. And <I>he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken. </I>Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither. And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, <I>thine only son from me.</I> And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.  And Abraham called the name of that place <I>Jehovah-jireh:</I> as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen. And <I>the LORD said unto Joshua</I>, See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour.</div> <bR> <div>   (12)<B> Judg</B><FONT SIZE="2" COLOR="#000000" FACE="Arial" > </FONT><B> 6:11-23</B> And there came <I>an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak </I>which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abi-ezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.  And<I> the angel of the LORD appeared unto him</I>, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour. And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites. And<I> the LORD looked upon him, and said,</I> Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee? Forasmuch as thou art God</I>, and I know thee, and thou hast sworn unto me, and commanded me that<I> I should ask in the name of thine Only Begotten</I>; thou hast made me, and given unto me a right to thy throne, and not of myself, but through thine own grace; wherefore, <I>I ask thee if thou wilt not come again on the earth.</I> And the Lord said unto Enoch: <I>As I live, even so will I come in the last days, </I>in the days of wickedness and vengeance, to fulfil the oath which I have made unto you concerning the children of Noah.</div> <bR> <div>       As can be seen in the above passages, man, angel and God were used interchangeably. Just because it says the angel of the Lord doesn't necessarily imply that it was an angel; it may mean God or Jehovah. Was Ezekiel's “man” guide only a man or was he an angel? Just because Ps  110:1 and Isa  53 show Heavenly Father being called “Jehovah” doesn't imply that all reference to “Jehovah” refer to him. More often than not, the  Tetragrammaton (YHWH) refers to the pre-mortal Christ as this study has proven. In Rev  22:7-8 we find the fascinating statement of an angel giving an address of Jesus in the first person. No wonder John was confused and tried to worship the angel despite previously being told not to. He thought it was Jesus who was talking to him. Daniel refers to the angel Gabriel as a “man.” The same situation even exists in the D&C & the PGP where Jesus is talking and quotes the Father's message in the first person. The Holy Ghost also quotes Jesus as if he was Jesus. Joseph Smith must've been surprised.</div> <div>      This interchangeability throughout the Scriptures with not only “angel of the LORD” and “God/YHWH;” but also with “angel” and “man” is why I reject the idea all “the angel of the LORD”<FONT SIZE="1" COLOR="#000000" FACE="Arial" >3</FONT> occurrences are hypostasis appearance of God.<FONT SIZE="1" COLOR="#000000" FACE="Arial" >4</FONT> Some very well may be since he is supposed to have presented himself instead of messengers or representatives on certain occasions (Isa  63:9) and some who saw the angel of the LORD claimed to have seen God himself (Gen  32:30; Judg  13:22) but the Scriptures as a whole support the interchangeability of honor due to singular authority. There is a<I> representative</I> characteristic of such interchangeability, instead of a veiled revealing of the divine presence.</div> <div>      If an ordinary human like Enoch is described as the  “Metatron,”<FONT SIZE="1" COLOR="#000000" FACE="Arial" >5</FONT> the  “Prince of the Divine Presence”<FONT SIZE="1" COLOR="#000000" FACE="Arial" >6</FONT> or  “little YHWH,”<FONT SIZE="1" COLOR="#000000" FACE="Arial" >7</FONT> who is both god and angel,<FONT SIZE="1" COLOR="#000000" FACE="Arial" >8</FONT> how much more is the term “YHWH” applicable to Jesus Christ? Which description is more exalted, the “little YHWH” or the “Son of YHWH?” Naturally the “little YHWH” since it gives the recipient an endowment of the Divine Name whereas the term “Son of YHWH” merely places the recipient in an inferior position to the holder of the Divine Name without an endowment (unless he is entitled to the same dignity as the holder of the Name which would enable him to inherit the Divine Name). What then should Jesus receive if Enoch is described as the “little YHWH” since Jesus is obviously greater than Enoch?
