CHAPTER 3
Whose Gospel and Church?
It is remarkable how often the biblical writers, especially Paul, interchange “God” and “Christ” which shows they viewed Jesus to be “God” and often use both phrases in close proximity to each other.
Whose Gospel is it?
A) The Gospel of Jesus Christ:
1) Mark 1:1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
2) Rom 1:9,16 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers ... For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
3) Rom 15:19,29 Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ ... And I am sure that, when I come unto you, I shall come in the fulness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ.
4) 1 Cor 9:12,18 If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ ... What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.
5) 2 Cor 2:12 Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord.
6) 2 Cor 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
7) 2 Cor 9:13 Whiles by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men.
8) 2 Cor 10:14 For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ.
9) Gal 1:7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
10) Phil 1:27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.
11) 1 Th 3:2 And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith.
12) 2 Th 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
B) The Gospel o f God:
1) Acts 20:24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.
2) Rom 1:1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God.
3) Rom 15:16 That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.
4) 2 Cor 11:7 Have I committed an offence in abasing myself that ye might be exalted, because I have preached to you the gospel of God freely?
5) 1 Th 2:2,9 But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention ... For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.
6) 1 Tim 1:11 According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.
7) 1 Pet 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
The Gospel is described as belonging to Jesus Christ and to God but since only one can own it, Jesus has to be God by inheriting all that the Father has.
Whose Church is it?
A) The Church of Jesus Christ:
1) Rom 16:16 Salute one another with an holy kiss. The churches of Christ salute you.
B) The Church of God:
1) Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
2) 1 Cor 1:2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours.
3) 1 Cor 10:32 Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God.
4) 1 Cor 11:16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
5) 1 Cor 11:22 What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.
6) 1 Cor 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
7) 2 Cor 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia.
8) Gal 1:13 For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews' religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it.
9) 1 Th 2:14 For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews.
10) 2 Th 1:4 So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure.
11) 1 Tim 3:5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
12) 1 Tim 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
The church belongs to God. The church belongs to Jesus Christ. All the Father has; Jesus has. This duality of ownership of the church shows Jesus is also God.
