I am searching for information about JESSEE LEE PRUITT/PREWITT- born Feb 4,

1883 in Mercer County, Ky and died there Sept 11, 1948. He was married to

MARTHA MAE LESTER. I know that he had at least one sister - HATTIE DORA

SALLEE (1890-1944). Their parents are JOSEPH NELSON PREWITT/PRUITT (june,

1852 - 1875) and NANCY JANE BULL (Aug, 1853-Apr 1942.) Jessee's was at

Nancy's funeral in Harrodsburg in 1944. In the ob, her name was spelled

"Prewitt" although Jessee's descendents have spelled the name "Pruitt."

My father, Jessee and Martha's son, was the last surviving male in the line.

I am new to this mailing list so hope I have done this right. Look forward

to hearing from kin. I have located a distant cousin who is a Lester.

I know that my great-great grandparents, George Rice Hyden and Elizabeth

Thomas Hyden split up sometime between the Civil War and 1870. I don't

know if it was in Lee Co. VA. or Claiborne Co. Tn. or Whitley Co. Ky. I

have been told that George married Malinda McKittery/ McKiddy by one

source, and that he married Malinda Pruitt/Pruett by another. I have

found Elizabeth in a Whitley Co. Census as Elizabeth Wilson. Does anyone

have information on this?

Thanks,

TIP#265 - FLOYD'S , BOWMAN'S, McCONNELL'S, JOHN CRAIG'S, GILBERT'S CREEK,

STOCKTON, BIG CROSSING

Floyd's Station is location about 1 ½ miles from Spring Station and about

six miles from Louisville. It was settled in 1779 and named for Col. John

FLOYD. The following names are shown in Draper msss 13 CC11-12 - these were

among those killed and wounded in an Indian attack when they were

attempting to to "Harrod's Old Town after the campaign under Logan."

John THICKSTON (wounded); John and Christopher WESTERFELT, Jas? SWAN, Jas

McGAUGHLIN, Thos. PYBURN (all these were killed), Polly and Debbs

WESTERFELT (daughters of Christopher), "cousin" Betsy SWAY. All the above

were taken prisoner and a GARRETT was tomahawked; Wm. THICKSTON was

wounded; Thos. PEARCE, wounded. The Widows McLAUGHLIN and PYBURN (who were

killed) lived afterward at FLOYD's. Old Mrs. WESTERFELT and her son Sam,

escaped. It was written that the survivors dug a great hole and buried

about 20 altogether. There were 10 families. James and Betsy SWAN were

attacked and Betsy wounded and tomahawked in coming to Floyd's from beyond

LINN's Station along with the WESTERFELTS. Col. John FLOYD was the oldest

of brothers, then Robert, then Chas., Ishel, Nancy PRYOR, Abby LEMASTERS,

Mrs. TOOLEY. After Col. John FLOYD was killed, his widow later married

Capt. Alexander BRACKENRIDGE and they continued to live at Floyds.

Bowman's Station was located 6 miles east of Harrodsburg and was settled by

Col. Abram BOWMAN in 1779. According to the Draper mss 13CC170-1 in an

interview with Herman BOWMAN, it was stated that seven families came with

his father from Virginia in the fall of 1779: Robert BOWMAN, Stephen

COLLINS, Joseph COLLINS, Joel COLLINS (the rest of his family stayed in

Virginia), Elisha PRUETT, Robt. PRUETT, Joshua PRUETT (this man had no

family); Wm. HALL, Thomas GLASS; James COX. Of the above individuals, HALL

and GLASS moved on to Lexington.

McConnell's Station was located one mile west of Lexington and was founded

by William McCONNELL in 1779. Drapes mss. 13CC82 "These all but my father

went up to McConnell's Station at Lexington:" Alexander McCONNELL, uncle;

John McCONNELL, Thos Smith, widow Mary HARPER, Danl. CAMPBELL, Robt

EDMISTON. In mss 11CC221 Thos. STEVENSON was named as being there.

John CRAIG's Station was settled in either January or February 1782.

According to the Shane Paper, there is an interview with a Mrs. ARNOLD. She

stated that those who came with CRAIG were: Old Mr. LAY, John PATTY; Tom

BELL; John VAUGHN, Col. YOUNG, old Mr. COLLINS, Andrew JOHNSON, Danl.

WILLCOX, John ARNOLD, John CRAIG and Mrs. ARNOLD. Joe CRAIG was also

mentioned.

Gilbert's Creek Station was established in 1781, assumed to have been in

Garrard County. Gilbert's Creek Baptist Church was established there that

year. Mrs. FALCONER was interviewed by Draper (mss 11C137) who said the

following families were stationed here: Wm. YOUNG's, JOHNSTON's, HAMPTON's,

FALCONER's and Nixon CHESTER's. The CRAIGS came in the fall of 1783. All

but John CRAIG remained here and she mentioned a Ben CRAIG's Station that

was settled in the spring of 1784 by Mr. FINNEY, James SMITHEY, Mr. GIBBS,

Mr. MARTIN, Jos. FALCONER. She also mentioned Lewis MASTIN and his

brother-in-law, Seth COOK of Fayette Co and tells of an Indian attack.

Stockton's Station was located 2 miles from Winchester in Clark County. It

was founded by George STOCKTON in January 1787. Draper mss 12CC231 shows an

interview with Capt. George C. STOCKTON. He stated that the WILLIAMS and

BARNS family settled at this station and Zadock WILLIAMS and his brother

were killed. George STOCKTON had come to the area as early as 1776 from

Pennsylvania with his half-brother, John FLEMING, Wm. McCLEARY (his

brother-in-law), and Sam. STRODE (a boy).

Big Crossing Station was in Scott County, KY and settled by Col. Robert

JOHNSON in the fall of 1783. Draper mss 11CC253 includes an interview with

Ben GUTHRIE wherein he states that Cave JOHNSON, brother of Robert, was in

the company, Dickey CAVE, Dick TAYLOR, the families of Robert JOHNSON,

Robert BRADLEY, SHORTRIDGE, John SUCKETT, David HERNDON (also spelled

HEARN), Thomas HRNDON, Henry HERNDON (single), widow HERNDON (their

mother), Julius GIBBS, Jimmy STURRETT and Stephen LOWRY.

To be continued with the stations in northern Kentucky.

subject, in his youth, received all the advantages of education of his day,

attending the Transylvania University two years, and one year at the

Kentucky Military Institute. In the Fall of 1861 he enlisted in the 9th Ky.

Cavalry, under Gen. Morgan, serving until the surrender. He was very

enthusiastic in the Southern cause, and took upon himself the perilous duty

of furnishing supplies and clothing for their troops, until a reward of

$500 was offered for his body dead or alive; at the time they made the

search for him he enlisted in the service, and for a feat of bravery upon

the field in rescuing a fallen comrade, he received a furlough home. He was

married Dec. 14, 1871 to Miss Sally M. Best, of Mason County (see hist. of

Dr. Best). They have no children, are members of the M.E. Church South,

aunt of Major Pelham's, who was distinguished in military circles.

#3729: Kentucky: A History of the State, Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, 8th ed.,

1888, Jefferson Co. HARRY STUCKY was born in Jefferson County, Kentucky,

September 19, 1827, and is a son of Frederick and Louisa (Myers) Stucky;

the former was also born in Jefferson County (in 1801) and is still living.

The subject was brought up on a farm near Jeffersontown, and educated in

the common schools. He came to Louisville in 1847, and became deputy

county clerk, serving for eight years. In April, 1861, he was elected

Auditor of the city of Louisville, served sixteen months, when he resigned.

In 1862 he was elected clerk of the Louisville Chancery Court, and served

until 1868, when he organized the Louisville Sinking Fund, and became

secretary and treasurer, which position he held for eight years, when he

was elected alderman from the Sixth Ward, and has held the place ever

since. He was married in December, 1856, to Miss Sallie Kemp Sweeney, of

Jefferson County, a daughter of Rev. Jos. A. Sweeney, of Virginia.

#3730: Kentucky: A History of the State, Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, 8th ed.,

1888, Jefferson Co. DR. THOMAS HUNT STUCKY was born in Louisville, Ky.,

March 21, 1860, educated in the public schools of that city, completed the

course at Bethany College, West Virginia; entered the University of

Medicine and graduated at Hospital College with one of the class honors;

received the appointment of House Surgeon at Bellevue Hospital, New York,

remaining, however, only six months, and resigning on account of ill

health, caused by too close application to study. He then went to Europe

and entered Strasburg University, remaining one term, a second and third at

Leipsic and Vienna, and completing his course and receiving his degree at

Strasburg. Returning to Louisville, he was elected Visiting Surgeon to the

Louisville Hospital, and the following year to the chair of Materia

Medica in the Louisville School of Pharmacy for Women, and in 1884, the

chair of Surgical Pathology and Operative Surgery in the Hospital Medical

College; also Physician for the City Board of Charity and Correction. Dr.

Stucky is regarded as the most expert Microscopist in Louisville, having a

rare tact for catching minute differences and great mechanical skill in

preparing specimens. As a lecturer he is clear, distinct and terse,

wasting little time on oratorical flourishes, but going at once to the gist

of the matter and giving the student a distinct and clear idea of the

subject without unnecessary verbiage. As a physician he enjoys a large and

lucrative practice, which he justly deserves by his faithfulness to the

best interests of his patients, being especially skilled in general surgery

and diseases of the throat. Dr. Stucky is thoroughly devoted to the cause

of professional education of women, and have repeatedly declined positions

in other institutions which would have paid him handsomely in a pecuniary

way, in order to give his time and efforts to this movement. Dr. T. H.

Stucky was married, in 1883, to Miss Lanin Prewitt, of Clark County, Ky.

Richard was a son of Peter Van Dyke, was born in what is now Spencer County in 1790, and died in 1868. He was an extensive farmer, and also followed the milling business. Peter Van Dyke came to Kentucky from Culpeper County, Va., about 1785, and was descended from a Dutch family, who settled in New Jersey, afterward moved to Culpeper County, Va., and were among the first settlers of the colony. Peter was twice married, and become the father of fourteen children. He had a landed estate of 1,400 acres, and left 100 acres to each of his children, besides giving to each two slaves. History of Bourbon, Scott, Harrison and Nicholas Counties, Kentucky, ed. by William Henry Perrin, O. L. Baskin & Co., Chicago, 1882. p. 593. [Scott County] [Georgetown City and Precinct] L. L. HERNDON, father, P. O. Great Crossings, whose portrait appears in this work was born to John and Elizabeth Herndon, on March 29, 1811, his birthplace being three miles from Georgetown, Scott County, Ky. His parents were married in 1810, and his mother was a daughter of Major Rodes Thompson, of Scott County. His father was born in Orange County, Va., in 1870, and came to Kentucky about 1809; being an invalid, and coming with a few servants and but limited means, it was due alone to his great energy and perseverance that he achieved pecuniary success; from farming and the manufacture of hemp, which he began near Georgetown as early as 1835, being one of the first manufacturers. At the time of his death, which occurred in 1849, he owned several large factories. His wife bore him eight children, four sons and four daughters. Like him, she was a consistent member of the Christian Church; she died in 1832. Three of the sons are residents of Scott county, and one lives in Henry county. His father was again married, the lady being Mrs. Prewitt, of Woodford County; she bore him to daughters. L. L. Herndon was educated in the schools of this county; at twenty-one he began farming. In 1837 he went to Arkansas, where for a period of two years he was engaged in cotton raising. In his early life he, like his father, raised a few thoroughbred horses, but was never a turfman in the modern sense. He moved to his present place at the Crossings in 1850; this formerly was owned by Col. James Johnson. One day recently, while remodeling a building, a Georgetown newspaper, published in 1810, was found between the wall and the fire place mantel, and he sealed it up with others of later dates, returning them to the same place. Mr. Herndon has been extensively engaged in buying and selling real estate, at which he has been very successful, his operations proving lucrative. His present large estate has been acquired largely by his own sturdy efforts. Under the old constitution he was sheriff of the county two terms. In 1859, Mr. Herndon made a tour of continental Europe, in company with A. Keene Richards and L. L. Johnson, making the trip for pleasure, and the profit gained by observation. Kentucky: A History of the State, Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, 8th ed., 1888, Jefferson Co. DR. THOMAS HUNT STUCKY was born in Louisville, Ky., March 21, 1860, educated in the public schools of that city, completed the course at Bethany College, West Virginia; entered the University of Medicine and graduated at Hospital College with one of the class honors; received the appointment of House Surgeon at Bellevue Hospital, New York, remaining, however, only six months, and resigning on account of ill health, caused by too close application to study. He then went to Europe and entered Strasburg University, remaining one term, a second and third at Leipsic and Vienna, and completing his course and receiving his degree at Strasburg. Returning to Louisville, he was elected Visiting Surgeon to the Louisville Hospital, and the following year to the chair of Materia Medica in the Louisville School of Pharmacy for Women, and in 1884, the chair of Surgical Pathology and Operative Surgery in the Hospital Medical College; also Physician for the City Board of Charity and Correction. Dr. Stucky is regarded as the most expert Microscopist in Louisville, having a rare tact for catching minute differences and great mechanical skill in preparing specimens. As a lecturer he is clear, distinct and terse, wasting little time on oratorical flourishes, but going at once to the gist of the matter and giving the student a distinct and clear idea of the subject without unnecessary verbiage. As a physician he enjoys a large and lucrative practice, which he justly deserves by his faithfulness to the best interests of his patients, being especially skilled in general surgery and diseases of the throat. Dr. Stucky is thoroughly devoted to the cause of professional education of women, and have repeatedly declined positions in other institutions which would have paid him handsomely in a pecuniary way, in order to give his time and efforts to this movement. Dr. T. H. Stucky was married, in 1883, to Miss Lanin Prewitt, of Clark County, Ky. Stucky Prewitt = Clark-KY WV NY Europe
