The Gospel of Luke-- Chap 18:18-27

Who is successful before God?

Luke 18:18 (NIV) A certain ruler asked him, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" 19 "Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: `Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.'" 21 "All these I have kept since I was a boy," he said. 22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, "You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." 23 When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth.

24 Jesus looked at him and said, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! 25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." 26 Those who heard this asked, "Who then can be saved?"27 Jesus replied, "What is impossible with men is possible with God."

28 Peter said to him, "We have left all we had to follow you!" 29 "I tell you the truth," Jesus said to them, "no one who has left home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 will fail to receive many times as much in this age and, in the age to come, eternal life."

A young, religious and successful business man (manager)

This young man had a high position of respect and honour in his circle. His reputation was blameless. He was used to give orders. We will see the mind and heart of this young man and we will be taught by Jesus some important truths about our salvation and our relationship to God. Eternal life With Jewish religion, it was associated with the resurrection of the righteous. Good teacher-- 18-19 Jesus shows he's not satisfied with the way the young man called him. You know the commandments Jesus starts referring him to the law of God, for "through the law comes the knowledge of sin" (Rom 3:20; Gal 3:24) See Luke 10:25-28 When the teacher of the law was testing Jesus asking: What must I do to inherit eternal life? How can we test our spiritual life?
  1. Come and follow me: my doctrine, my discipline, whatever it costs.
  2. When we are aware of helping the needs of others, How much concern do we show by our actions?
  3. By the way we look at this world… Do we see all the misery? It should move us not to stick to our wealth but to be willing to share and help.
  4. By the way we look at the other world… We desire nothing else than to have treasure in heaven… to know the abundant reward awaiting us far beyond what we may have left or lost for God…
One thing you still lack-- 22 The demand Jesus made on him was appropriate for him and the way he lived. You will have "treasure in Heaven," It does not only mean in the other world, but now in this life: Those heavenly blessings in full measure reserved for God's children… Then come follow me In following Him to be prepared for active witnessing, he needed to learn to deny himself and to take up his cross in the discipline of Christ. He became very sad His response was tragic. He liked to be in control over his own life and of others. How hard it is for those who posses wealth to enter in the kingdom of god--23,24 Then who can be saved? truth about salvation Jesus' comments had a great effect on his listeners. They were shocked. Peter In Matt, Peter said: "What then shall we have?" Haven't they not done what Jesus asked the young rich man to do?

It is very natural for most of us to speak too much about what we have left or lost, what we have done or suffered…

receive many times as much in this age… This promise is for all true believers (no one…) Is it worth it?

Ephe 1:3 (NIV) Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
