The Gospel of Luke-- Chap 4:5-8
The lust of the eyes and senses
The devil appeals to the lust of our flesh, causing us to complain
and to distrust our Heavenly Father.
This week, we'll look at the nature of Jesus' second temptation.
Luke 4:5 (NIV) The devil led him up to a high
place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.
6 And he said to him, "I will give you all
their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give
it to anyone I want to.
7 So if you worship me, it will all be yours."
8 Jesus answered, "It is written: Worship
the Lord your God and serve him only.'"
-
How do we conceive the picture described here?
-
V. 5 The devil led him up to a high place and
showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.
-
Did they walk together until they reached a high mountain?
-
The Key words are: "in an instant", suggesting that it was
through a vision, a suggestion in his mind. All the kingdoms of the world
were shown in an instant.
-
A suggestion in his mind. We have to watch over our mind.
In Hong Kong, we often read the sign "Mind your head".
-
If it was through a vision that he was tempted, can it be counted through
as a real temptation?
-
The devil was real to Jesus, because Jesus was able to discern the Spirit:
EX: When he said to Peter, Get behind me satan, your thoughts are not from
God... When he rebuked James and John...
-
What was suggested (offered to him) in his mind was very real. It was a
real temptation.
-
Isn't it the same way we are tempted? Through suggestions in our mind suddenly
pops up an evil thought, an evil action, a strong desire...
-
The devil said to him:
6 And he (the devil) said to him, "I
will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to
me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 So if you worship me, it will
all be yours."
-
The question is: Was satan really the possessor of all the kingdoms?
-
In Eph 2:2, he is called: the prince of the power of the air
-
1 John 5:19, the whole world lies under the power of the evil one. (See
2Cor 4:4)
-
Jesus didn't answer his claim...
-
What is the truth laid out in the Scriptures?
Gene 3:15 (NKJV) And I will put enmity Between
you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed; He shall
bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel."
Psal 2:8 (NIV) Ask of me, and I will make
the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.
-
Any power that Satan has is not given but permitted,
not absolute but limited. (It's a lie thathe can gives the world.)
Psal 24:1 (NIV) The earth is the LORD's, and
everything in it, the world, and all who live in it;
Dani 2:21 (NIV) He changes times and seasons;
he sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge
to the discerning.
The Son of God is the true heir of the world
Hebr 1:2 (NIV) but in these last days he has
spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and
through whom he made the universe.
Matt 11:27 (NIV) "All things have been committed
to me by my Father.
Ephe 1:20 (NIV) which he exerted in Christ
when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the
heavenly realms,
21 far above all rule and authority, power
and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present
age but also in the one to come.
22 And God placed all things under his feet
and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is
his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
Colo 2:15 (NIV) And having disarmed the powers
and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them
by the cross.
Reve 12:9 (NIV) The great dragon was hurled
down that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole
world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.
10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:
"Now have come the salvation and the power
and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ.
For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses
them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.
11 They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb
and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much
as to shrink from death.
Matt 28:18 (NIV) Then Jesus came to them and
said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Throughout the Gospel, you see Jesus' authority over evil spirit
The best answer to Was satan really the possessor of all the kingdoms?
can be found in John 8:44
John 8:44 (NIV) You belong to your father,
the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer
from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in
him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and
the father of lies.
There are 2 lies in the devil's offer:
1. Power and glory was at his disposal
2. He could invest Christ with full possession of the world's glory.
Some observations on the manner of this temptation
It was presented in a manner grateful: (I will give you) and pleasing:
(their authority and splendor)
-
The devil knows the world is so corrupt that they will violate their conscience
for a small profit. He can buy people at a very easy price.
-
Everyday we meet with these kinds of temptation: (these little compromise)
-
30 pence was enough to make Judas betray his master.(Matt 26:15)
-
Ezekiel told that some will transgress for a handfuls of barley and pieces
of bread. (13:19)
-
Amos told us of those that sell the poor for a pair of shoes (2:6; 8:6)
-
Hebrews 12:16 says of Esau: "For 1 morsel of meat he sold his birthright.
-
But the devil knew that small matters were no temptation to Christ, so
he carried him to the mountain, that he might see the glory of all the
earth, to make the temptation stronger.
Notice that he presented the glory, not the burdens, the troubles,
the cares, jalousy, envy, violence...(Beer and cigarettes advertisement)
He showed him a the tempting object before he maketh his demand:
(All these things I will give you)
It's the promise before the condition. He offered the benefit before
he required the service.
(Watch out) The promise is for the future, but the requirement
is now. He required a present act. You can see the fraud of the tempter.
He promise us something he will not give - for a sin that we should
commit now.
What a contrast with Jesus' way who always present the cross first. (Matt
16:24)
He does not only use words, but the sight of the object itself because
he knows that seeing the object moves the senses and senses draw away the
mind.
Psal 119:37 (NIV) Turn my eyes away from worthless
things; preserve my life according to your word.
-
The eye is what is between - the heart - and the object.
-
The eye gaze, the snses (heart and mind) lust. This is the window by which satan crept
in.
-
Gen 3:6, Eve, gazing on the fruit with delight, her heart was ensnared.
-
Gen 39:7, Potifar's wife cast her eyes on Joseph
-
Joshua 7:21, Achan When I saw among the spoils... then I coveted and took
them
-
Gen 34:2, Shechem saw Dinah, took her and laid with her, and he defiled
her
-
Judges 16:1, Samson saw there an harlot, went in with her
-
2Samuel 11:2, David was ensnared by his eyes. From the roof, he saw a woman...
very beautiful to look upon.
-
1Kings 21:1,2, Naboth's vineyard was ever in Ahab's eyes... He fell sick
for it.
-
Because so many have been betrayed by their eyes and senses, the devil
taked this way to tempt Christ.
In a moment time: Temptations come quickly. They takes us by surprise.
Suddenly under pressures, we do not have time to consider... the
outcome, the price to paid...
At first sight, the devil's requirement only seemed as a little act
of external adoration, easy to perform. He knows that if he can
get us to compromise a little, he shall get us for more.
Observe the phrase "Again the devil took him". Not once but again
and again, temptation will be presented to us under many disguises (forms).
Be careful, it's often after many great achievements that many great men
of God fell toward the end of their lives.
satan can make fair promises but cannot keep them. He fills the mind of
those he ensnared with vain hopes. They end in shameful disappointment
and find their ruin in which they sought their exaltation.
-
He promised our first parents they'll be as gods (Gen 3:5). What came instead?
Psal 49:12 (NIV) But man, despite his riches,
does not endure; he is like the beasts that perish.
Matt 27:4 (NIV) "I have sinned," he said, "for
I have betrayed innocent blood."
"What is that to us?" they replied. "That's
your responsibility."
5 So Judas threw the money into the temple
and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.
The world is the bait by which the devil would deceive us and steal
us away from God.
He fills us with worries and with the cares of this world, and with
the deceitfulness of wealth. This cannot never satisfy.
We are tempted by satan, encouraged to sin by the example of the world,
but inclined to sin by our own flesh.
The world is an enemy of our salvation as well as the devil and our own
flesh.
Where there is a lot of the world, there is a neglect of God and heaven:EXAMPLE:
Luke 12:19 (NIV) And I'll say to myself,
"You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy;
eat, drink and be merry." '
Just as he used the world's glory to tempt Christ to idolatry, with the
pleasures of the world, he tempted Demas to depart from the faith:
2Tim 4:10 (NIV) for Demas, because he loved
this world, has deserted me...
He does it by his instruments just as Balak promised great rewards and
honour to Balaam if he did for him what he requested of him. (Numners 22:17)
In what sense was it a temptation to Christ?
6 And he (the devil) said to him, "I
will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to
me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 So if you worship me, it will
all be yours."
8 Jesus answered, "It is written: `Worship
the Lord your God and serve him only.'{[8] Deut. 6:13}"
Jesus knew well the purpose of his mission, of his coming on earth as a
man.
He knew he had to drink the cup of suffering Luke 12:50 (Look at his agony
in Gethsemane only a few hours before he was to face his trial and death...)
He was tempted through worldy success, politics and fame.
Here satan is suggesting to Jesus to obtain the crown without enduring
the cross. He could use compromise with the devil not to fulfill the mission
God had assigned him: THE REDEMPTION OF MANKIND through his sufferings
and death on the cross. God had laid upon him the chastisement of us all.
Jesus did not lose his focus. He discerned the devil's intention to deduce
him away from the only solution to the true problem of men, that is SIN.
Jesus' answer was inspired partly from Deuteronomy 6:13, "You
shall worship the Lord your God and serve him only".
Let's look at Deuteronomy 6:13, 5:9, and 1 Samuel
7:3 to better understand the principles Jesus is laying out before us.
This is a very essential principle to understand and apply to our life
if we are to serve God with our life in serve God in any ministry.
Deut 6:13 (NKJV) "You shall fear the Lord
your God and serve Him, and shall take oaths in His name.
14 "You shall not go after other gods,
the gods of the peoples who [are] all around you
Deut 5:9 (NIV) You shall not bow down
to them or worship them;
Deut 5:9 (NKJV) you shall not bow down
to them nor serve them.
1Sam 7:3 (NKJV) Then Samuel spoke to all the
house of Israel, saying, "If you return to the Lord with all your hearts,
[then] put away the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths from among you,
and prepare your hearts for the Lord, and serve Him only;
and He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines."
There are 2 words in Hebrew that are translated as
worship:
The 1st one pronounced "Shaw-Khaw" means to bow down,
or to prostrate in hommage before a superior. See Deut 5:9
The 2nd one pronounced "Aw-bad" means serve, do work,
to work (with levetical service), and worshippers. See Deut 5:9.
We learn that these two words are related both
to our concept of God and to our service unto God.
Now let's look back at satan's offer for a compromise.
Look at the sequence of Jesus' answer:
"7 So if you worship me, it will all be yours."
8 Jesus answered, "It is written: `Worship
the Lord your God and serve him only.'{[8] Deut. 6:13}"
The term used by the devil in Greek is "Proskuneo". In the NT To kneel
down or to prostrate, in order to express obedience, respect or to
make supplication.
What was the devil's wish?
How did Jesus answered?
-
Worship: (Bow down), Acknowledgement of the Lord God as his master.
A mark of respect and humility to God's authority.
-
Serve: (To do work for God as a levite, a ministry unto the Lord),
A heart's commitment to obey, to work, to sacrifice and to serve.
-
Only: (No deviation, no compromise), A clear sense of direction,
a clear purpose, a clear understanding of his call and of his mission.
Nothing will come in between.
-
Deut 6:13 (NKJV) "You shall fear the Lord your
God and serve Him,
-
14 "You shall not go after other gods,
-
Deut 5:9 (NIV) You shall not bow down to
them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous Deut
5:9 (NKJV) you shall not bow down to them nor serve them.
-
1Sam 7:3 (NKJV) "If you return to the Lord with
all your hearts,
-
[then] put away the foreign gods
-
prepare your hearts for the Lord,
-
and serve Him only;
Throughout all of our life time, this temptation will come as a challenge
to the way we will decide to live our life.
Temptation or compromise to take us away from God's will and to run
after the ways of the world. He tempts us with object to entice our heart
with the lust of the eyes and senses.
(REMEMBER THAT THESE TEMPTATION CAME TO JESUS BEFORE HE BEGAN HIS PUBLIC
MINISTRY)
Will we stand firm to live according to God's high moral standards and
submit to his perfect will and purposes for our life? Will we answer his
calling?
-OR-
Will we yield to satan's offer to gain the world through compromises
with the world's principles? Will we subject ourselves to the mold of this
world? to its ungodly principles?
Will we fail to stand against the temptation to live under the world's
philosophies and principles: Selfishness, materialism, pride, evil, etc...
We need to fill our mind with God's principles of wisdom and discernment.
Through prayer and the word, we need to nourish our faith and we need to
be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit to discern and to resist.
We need to grow in the knowledge of God so we will revere him (fear) and
make Him the only and highest authority of our lives.
We need to Commit ourselves to love and obey him only.
We must fix our eyes on the reward.- Heaven.
We need to know the reality of the bitterness and desillusion that await
of those who compromise (a little act easy to perform in order to obtain
bright promises of success from the devil.
Ps 37:1-2
