The Gospel of Luke-- Chap 4:13,14
The role of the Holy Spirit
The beloved Son of
God was born as a man, of the Holy Spirit, filled of the Holy Spirit, led
by the Holy Spirit, so that in everything he was pleasing to God. He returned
in the power of the Spirit READY to begin his ministry.
Luke 4:13 (NKJV) Now when
the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune
time. 14 Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and
news of Him went out through all the surrounding region.
Now when the devil had ended every temptation
It was necessary for Jesus to be tempted in order to become a pattern
of victory and conquest. Jesus resisted all kinds of temptations:
1) In the area of physical daily needs, 2) In the area of the worldly
seductions, 3) And in the area of spiritual seduction.
In each, the Lord, maintained his obedience and his dependence
to the Word.
The Word of God is the expression of the will, the promises,
and the authority of God, which apply to all the circumstances of man.
Jesus shown what a perfect man is: a man who lived by the Word,
a man who lived in complete dependence upon God and had a perfect trust
that needed no other proof of God's faithfulness than his Word.
Through this time of testing, He kept his position of dependence on
God's provision and of obedience to God's mission.
As a man filled of the Holy Spirit, he became the conqueror of Satan.
He departed from Him until an opportune time. Be ready for a
life time conflict.
The power of the spirit in jesus' life
14 Then Jesus returned in the power of
the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him (HIS MESSAGE,
HIS WORKS) went out through all the surrounding region.15 And He taught
in their synagogues, being glorified by all. 16 So He came to
Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went
into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He
was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book,
He found the place where it was written:
18 "The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon Me, Because
He has anointed Me 1) To preach the gospel to [the] poor; 2) He has sent
Me to heal the brokenhearted, 3) To proclaim liberty to [the] captives
4) And recovery of sight to [the] blind, 5) To set at liberty those who
are oppressed; 19 6) To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord."
20 Then He closed the book, and gave [it] back
to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue
were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, "Today this Scripture
is fulfilled in your hearing." 22 So all bore witness to Him, and marveled
at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said,
"Is this not Joseph's son?"
He returned in the power of the Spirit: - Role of the spirit
We see the works of the Holy Spirit in Jesus' life.
The beloved Son of God was born as a man, of the Holy Spirit,
filled of the Holy Spirit, led by the Holy Spirit, so that in everything
he was pleasing to God. He returned in the power of the Spirit READY to
begin his ministry.
Look at the many mention oh the Holy Spirit just in a few verses...
Many today claim the anointing… Do they have it?
What is the mark of the power in Jesus life?
Before the power of miracles was manifested, the power of obedience
to God and the power to resist temptation was manifested.
The only weapon Jesus used is simple obedience and faith directed by
the Word of God.
Satan is overcome and powerless before this perfect man: the last Adam.
When we repent and believe in Jesus, we are born of the Spirit.
We can be filled of the Spirit. If we live by the power of the Holy Spirit,
we ARE ENABLED to live by the word in dependence to God.
The text Jesus selected
17 And He was handed the book of the prophet
Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was
written
Jesus is now ready to begin his public ministry. Jesus did not select
a text about his sufferings at the early stage of his ministry.
Instead He selected a place where he announced what his divine
mission was, and the source of His power to accomplish it.
Delivrance and salvation has come
18 "The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to [the] poor; He has sent
Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to [the] captives And
recovery of sight to [the] blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord."
This prophecy from Isaiah described the miserable state of those Israelites
who were taken captives by the Babylonians.
Jeremiah also described the condition of the captives in Zedekiah's
time who were not only cast into prison, but, like Zedekiah, had their
eyes put out, and were burdened and bruised with chains of iron.
Jere 39:5 (KJS) But the Chaldeans' army pursued
after them, and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho: and when they
had taken him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to
Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he gave judgment upon him. 6 Then the
king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah in Riblah before his eyes: also
the king of Babylon slew all the nobles of Judah.7 Moreover he put out
Zedekiah's eyes, and bound him with chains, to carry him
to Babylon. 8 And the Chaldeans burned the king's house, and the houses
of the people, with fire, and brake down the walls of Jerusalem. 9 Then
Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive into Babylon
the remnant of the people that remained in the city, and those that fell
away, that fell to him, with the rest of the people that remained. 10 But
Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left of the poor of the people,
which had nothing, in the land of Judah, and gave them vineyards and
fields at the same time.
Psal 107:10 (KJS) Such as sit in darkness and
in the shadow of death, [being] bound in affliction and iron;
Jesus used that picture to compare with the spiritual state of the men
he was sent to deliver. 2Cor 4:3,4; 3:16,17
2Cor 4:3 (NIV) And even if our gospel is
veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 The god of this age
has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light
of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
2Cor 3:16 (NIV) But whenever anyone turns to the
Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where
the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
Poor, captives or prisoners, blind or broken hearted, oppressed.
Apicture of people held captives by the power of sin and by the power of
the ennemy in the kingdom of darkness.
-
Jesus does not announce promises but the fulfilment of promises. 4:21 "Today
this Scripture is fulfilled".
The time of delivrance has come.
How can someone dare to preach - delivrance- when that person may not
be even able to resist temptation?
The One who has overcome satan's temptation has proven that the power
of the Holy Spirit is truly upon him..
He was filled with the Spirit, led by the Spirit to be tempted (tested),
and he returned in the power of the Spirit with victory, to begin his mission
(ministry). He was anointed (empowered, fully equipped with knowledge,
wisdom and power.
-
From the beginning of mankind, satan has succeeded to have people bound
in sin and slavery. They were held captives under his dominion.
-
Now the proclamation of the Good News…
-
There is one who can set us free- Jesus - He proved that he can in defeating
satan first.
The ministry of Jesus included many blessings both for the body and
the soul…
42 Now when it was day, He departed and
went into a deserted place. And the crowd sought Him and came to Him,
and tried to keep Him from leaving them;43 but He said to them, "I must
preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this
purpose I have been sent." 44 And He was preaching in the synagogues
of Galilee.
Again, we see one of Jesus' secret of his power. Alone with God. God first.
for this purpose I have been sent: Jesus knew what was
the purpose of his life.
He did not come to seek honor from men, he knew he was heading to the
cross.
Mark 10:45 (NIV) For even the Son of Man
did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom
for many."
Conclusion:
When we believe in Jesus:
-
We are delivered from the slavery of sin and from the dominion of the kingdom
of darkness.
-
Our sins are forgiven.
-
We are reconciled with God.
-
We received Eternal life. (a new life, a new beginning)
We find the real purpose and the real sense of our life.
