Hokie Heartbreaker! VPI 22 WVU 20

What a heartbreaking loss as the Mountaineers watch a miraculous comeback to #3 Va. Tech evaporate with a nifty scramble by Vick and game winning field goal! That's a tough one to take, but give Tech credit. They hung in there, and with Vick's athleticism came back to steal a victory away from the Mountaineers!

Let's face it. This season is over. How's about playing the underclassmen. Brad Lewis is doing a good job backing up the oft-injured Marc Bulger. Let's see some others get some PT. We need to start the 2000 season TODAY by giving valuable game experience to players. IMHO Perlo needs to be benched! He should look for a job with the Sunbeam Toaster Company after school! He gets burned so much! Get his back-up in there. . . he can't be any worse!

As disapointing as this season has been for fans and players, let's keep focused and look to the future. We won't be as "green" next year and maybe, just maybe we can knock off a struggling Notre Dame program!

Let's GOOOOOOOOOOOO Mountaineers!!!!!

The DawgEers Take on Dandy Don Nehlen

Eye opening WVU number crunching!

I got that all-time WVU win/loss record list yesterday. I just took the time to figure out some things and discovered some VERY interesting, if not disturbing, things:

Don Nehlen's victory total [39] over WINNING record teams since 1980 [wins over even .500 teams not included]:

1980 - 2 [Colorado State, Rutgers]

1981 - 2 [Va. Tech, Florida]

1982 - 4 [Md, Tech, East Car., Oklahoma]

1983 - 5 [Md, Tech, BC, Pitt, Kentucky]

1984 - 5 [Tech, BC, Penn State, Syracuse, TCU]

1985 - 2 [Tech, Syr]

1986 - 1 [Rutgers]

1987 - 1 [Rutgers]

1988 - 2 [Pitt, Syr]

1989 - 3 [Syr, Ball State, So. Caro.]

1990 - 0

1991 - 2 [Rutgers, Bowling Green]

1992 - 0

1993 - 4 [Tech, BC, Syr, Miami]

1994 - 2 [BC, Syr]

1995 - 0

1996 - 1 [ECU]

1997 - 2 [Tech, Marshall]

1998 - 1 [Syr]

Some interesting facts:

We won vs. better teams in the early '80's at a much greater rate than the over the last decade and a half. Nehlen's production tapered off from 1984, aka "the last bowl win season." Counting the 4 wins in 1993, WVU has only won 21 games vs. over .500 teams in 15 years. Included within this total are wins over Rutgers (3)and three MAC schools. Nehlen wins vs. an over .500 opponent exactly 1.4 times per season out of what has averaged out to be 11.4 games per fall.

Don Nehlen has coached in games against 74 over .500 opponents at WVU. He is 39-35 against them. However, his record falls to 21-30 since 1985. In the past five years [since '94] he is 6-11. In the past ten, he is 15-24.

Interestingly enough, Syracuse has had a winning record 15 out of 16 seasons since 1983. However, WVU/Nehlen has beaten them 7 times during those seasons, by far the most of any winning team that we have faced.

Facts. All facts.

Great Work, Syzygy!

Fellow Mountaineers, Facts are Facts! Don Nehlen has been in a steady decline throughout this decade. 1993 aside, the 90's have been MEDIOCRE at best!

I personally feel it's time for the man to walk away. WVU owes Don Nehlen its respect and gratitude for taking the program to heights many never dared dream of. But the trends of choking against quality opponents, choking in Bowl games, and lack of discipline on the playing field must be put to a screeching HALT!

I'm not the only one thinking this way. Read what Bill2 has to say.

John in Chicago has a few thoughts as well!

A Mountaineer fan known as The Major in Gainesville makes a comparison of Coach Nehlen and a certain white and orange visor wearin' whinin' coach down south. . .

Syzygy ain't the only one examining the numbers! 17-14 sheds some light on close games!

All of these posts from other fans point toward a need for a change of some kind in Morgantown!

I say erect a statue to Coach Nehlen by the stadium, make him A.D., kick Pastilong out, and bring in Rich Rodriguez from Clemson for our new Head Coach.

WE NEED NEW BLOOD AT WVU!!!
