Alert!!! New Medical Information
This letter came to me via e-mail from a friend. It was written by a Jane Margolis.
Jane has Primary Peritoneal Cancer, which has only recently been identified as its own type of cancer. It is essentially Ovarian Cancer. Both types of cancer are diagnosed in the same way with the tumor marker CA-125 blood test and they are treated in the same way -- surgery to remove the primary tumor and then chemotherapy with Taxol and Carboplatin.
In her own words:
"One thing I have learned is that each of us must take total responsibility for our own health care. I thought I had done that because I always had an annual physical, had my annual mammogram and pap smear, did monthly self breast exam, went to the dentist at least twice a year, etc. I even insisted on a sigmoidoscopy and a bone test last year.
"When I had a total hysterectomy in 1993, I thought that I did not have to worry about getting any of the female reproductive organ cancers. Little did I know! I don't have ovaries but I have what is essentially ovarian cancer. Strange, isn't it?
"These are some of the things our doctors never tell us: One out of every 55 women will get ovarian or primary peritoneal cancer. THE CLASSIC SYMPTOMS ARE AN ABDOMEN THAT SUDDENLY ENLARGES AND CONSTIPATION AND/OR DIARRHEA. I had these classic symptoms and went to the doctor. Because these symptoms seemed to be 'abdominal,' I went to a gastroenterologist. He ran tests that were designed to determine whether there was a bacterial infection. These tests were negative and I was diagnosed with 'Irritable Bowel Syndrome.' I guess I would have accepted this diagnosis had it not been for my enlarged abdomen. I swear to you, it looked like I was 4-5 months pregnant! Therefore, I insisted on more tests. They took an x-ray of my abdomen; it was negative. I was again assured that I had Irritable Bowel Syndrome and was encouraged to go on my scheduled month-long trip to Europe.........I insisted on more tests and they reluctantly scheduled me for a CT-Scan......This is what I mean by taking charge of our own health care.
"The CT-Scan showed a lot of fluid in my abdomen (not normal)! Needless to say, I had to cancel my trip and have Five Pounds of fluid drained off at the hospital......Tests revealed cancer cells in the fluid.
"Finally, finally, finally, the doctor ran a CA-125 blood test and I was properly diagnosed. I HAD THE CLASSIC SYMPTOMS FOR OVARIAN CANCER AND YET THIS SIMPLE CA-125 BLOOD TEST HAD NEVER BEEN RUN ON ME -- not as part of my annual physical exam and not when I was symptomatic. This is an inexpensive and simple blood test!!!
"Please tell all your female friends and relatives to insist on a CA-125 blood test every year as part of your annual physical exam......Believe me, had I known then what I know now, the cancer would have been caught much earlier before it became a stage 3 cancer!
"INSIST on the CA-125 blood test. Don't take NO for an answer. The normal range for this test is between zero and 35. Mine was 754, that's right, 754!!! Having the CA-125 test done annually can alert you early and that's the goal in diagnosing any type of cancer.
NEW WEAPON IN WAR ON CANCER -- YOUR COMPUTER!!!!!!!!!
Researchers have produced a program that automatically puts your computer to work in its idle time, looking for new drugs to fight the disease. The program tests numerous molecules as cancer-fighters and transmits results to Oxford University in England via the Internet.
The concept is to link millions of PCs around the world into a "virtual supercomputer" that will dwarf the most potent state-of-the-art computers on earth. The project could save up to five years in the design and distribution of anticancer drugs.
Anyone with a personal computer can download the new software to run as a screen saver. For more information, go to: www.intel.com/cure.
Diabetics Heal Faster with Light
New studies show that an FDA approved light-emitting device speeds the healing of wounds, even in difficult to treat diabetic ulcers.....The latest study tested the device on diabetic neuropathy, a previously irreversible condition that often leads to amputation.....Most showed improveent after six 30 minute treatments. The study was presented last year at the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions.
In addition to treating wounds and neuropathy, it's been used on arthritis, fractures, bursitis and tendinitis. No side effects have been reported.... (from USA Weekend Jan. 11-13, 2002)
NEW PILL wages war on LEUKEMIA -- Gleevec
A promising new pill for leukemia was approved by the FDA in early May. The drug, Gleevec, targets only bad cells and produces few, if any, side effects.
NEW "MINI" KNEE IMPLANT CAN HELP MILLIONS OF AMERICANS WITH ARTHRITIC KNEES. A tiny implant called the Uni Knee, gets people back on their feet faster, with less pain and at a fraction of the cost of conventional knee replacement. Patients take their first steps the same day as the surgery, and go home either that same day or the day after. Total knee replacement requires a hospital stay of five to seven days with weeks of physical therapy. HMO's like Uni Knee replacement because it costs half as much as traditional knee replacement. For referrals to Uni Knee surgeons go to: www.pacewithlife.com or call 1-866-346-3647.
Did You Know ....
What so many Seniors may not understand is that according to the Federal Government, if you reach the age of 60 and have a single disability, you automatically become a disabled "frail elder." That has all sorts of implications for local governments, service organizations and individuals themselves.
What is also not widely understood is that even though most of us are living longer, those final eight plus years are most likely to be lived as a member of the Disabled community. Live long enough and you automatically become a member by circumstance or government definition.
