Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is known as the "silent disease" because it has no symptoms, in other words, you don't know you have it until it's too late. Osteoporosis is a disease of the skeleton caused by an imbalance in the body's bone-rebuilding cycle, which results in bone loss, most common in post-menopausal women.
This often means a fall resulting in an unexpected leg or hip fracture is the first a women realizes that she has osteoporosis. This could lead to another disability.
"For the seriousness of this disease, it's amazing how treatable it is....the only thing worse then sustaining an osteoporosis-related injury is having the knowledge that you could have done something to prevent it," said Rita Moreno, star of stage and screen. Moreno trumpets the bone mineral density screening, a 15-20 minute test with instant results that can tell the patient whether he or she has experienced bone loss. This test is painless and noninvasive and it doesn't require the subject to undress. The test is covered by most insurance companies, including Medicare.
Florence Henderson, star of The Brady Bunch, also has osteoporosis, said "People think this is an old person's disease, but there are a lot of young people that have it too."
There are multiple medications available to treat this disease. Check with your doctor and have the bone density test. Here is International Osteoporosis Foundation Website:
MIRACLE GLUE KO' s OSTEOPOROSIS PAIN
An amazing bone cement fixes spinal faractures and banishes pain for people with osteoporosis. In a procedure called vertebroplasty, doctors actually inject a kind of "Super Glue" into mushy or cracked vertebrae and relief can be instant. Compression fractures of the spine are common in the 10 million Americans afflicted with osteoporosis. Vertebroplasty is quick, almost painless, and can have patients back on their feet within hours.
BONE DEGENERATION SITE: The Osteoporosis Institute, a Los Angeles-based medical practice and association, has launched a web site worth checking out if you're seeking information about this skeletal disorder. The site at www.osteoinstitute.org includes information about prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis, which affects one in two women and one in eight men over age 50.
