Helpful Hints for Friends of Children Who Have Disabilities
* It's okay to offer your help to a friend, but don't just go ahead. Ask first, or wait for a friend to ask you for help.
* It's okay to ask afriend about his/her disability, but it's also okay for a friend to not want to talk about it. It should be the person's choice.
* Because a friend uses a wheelchair, it doesn't mean your friend is sick. Lots of people who use wheelchairs are healthy and strong.
* It's okay to use words like "see," "hear," "walk" and "run" when talking with a friend who has a disability.
* Invite a friend who has a disability to sleep over, come to your house to play, or join you when you're going somewhere of interest. Think about ways your friend could be included in the things you do.
* Treat a friend who has a disability the way you like to be treated.
* See a friend who has a disability as a person just like anyone else. Attempt to treat them that way.
* Understand that although a friend's disability may be caused by a disease, the disability is not the disease itself, and cannot be passed on to others.
* Appreciate what a friend can do. Remember that your friend's difficulties may have more to do with other people's attitudes, or with obstacles your friend may encounter than with the disability.
* Speak directly with a friend who has a disability, rather than through someone else. Help draw your friend into the conversation or group.
* Be considerate of the extra time it might take for a friend with a disability to get things said or done. Let your friend set the pace in walking or talking.
* It's so important that we instill the proper attitudes in our children regarding people with disabilities. By taking the time to discuss these points with a young person, you can help pave the way toward a better understanding of people with disabilities -- now and for the next generation. Use this information as a reference for a discussion with a young person. And, suggest that others do the same. Contact your area Easter Seals for additional information to share with children about people of all ages who have disabilities.
Easter Seals Program Creates Solutions
Medical equipment can be extremely expensive. The cost of items such as wheelchairs, hospital beds, walkers, cruthes and can can add up quickly to reach thousands of dollars. For seniors on a fixed income, low-income individuals and people who have no insurance coverage, obtaining medical equipment presents a financial dilemma. But, the Easter Seals Medical Equipment Rental Program offers a helping hand in solving the problem.
In fact, the Easter Seals' helping hand has even stretched across international borders. The Medical Equipment Rental program often donates wheelchairs and other items to Wheels for Humanity who refurbishes and distributes thousands of wheelchairs and other equipment to people with physical disabilities all over the world.
