Vehicle Scale The M4 Sherman Which Company Has It Right
I have Sherman's in all marks and from just about all makers. The size variations are remarkable, The Revell M4 in 1/40 is about the same size as the Monogram M4 in 1/32. The New Ray in 1/32 is smaller than the E8s in 1/35 by both Academy and Tamiya (same molds?). The Italeri M4s and the Tamiya Jumbo seem tiny. The 21st Century (Motor Works or Forces of Valor depending on where you buy them) M4s in 1/32 are the longest of all. The MP M50 seems the same size as both Easy 8 kits but is bigger than the DML M50.
Of course its not just Shermans the New Ray King Tiger in 1/32 is exactly the same size as the Tamiya King Tiger in 1/35 and the 21st Cenrury halftracks in 1/32 are much bigger than the Monogram 1/32 halftracks. Who has it right anyone have an opinion?

I think none of them have it exactly right. I tend to go with Tamiya kits because the molds are crisper and the parts fit is better.

There is a wide variation indeed. I just bought some Monogram M4s off ebay to build up to display with the ultimate soldier/motorworks M4s and Forces of Valor machines appear to be pretty close in size.
Of course I am not taking a micromete to them either.
There are some very slight differences in the shermans regarding length but it isnt but a foot or so perhaps in some length added to the body.
The old Tamiya kit was awfully dang big. Like the Hasegawa M4s in 1/72. They are definately bigger than other 1/72 sherman tanks.
After I build some of these monogram shermans I will see how they match up with the newer motor works and FOV pieces.

I think the best Sherman model is the easy 8 kits first produced by Tamiya then released by Academy.
The forces of valor 1/32 Shermans also sold in Wal Mart under the Motor Works label are well made but are longer than the both Mongram Shermans and look a little odd next to my 1/35 units.

My personnel favorite Sherman kit is the old long out of production Revell Black Magic Sherman from the 1950s. My father built models at that time and I was lucky in that he had put two of those Revell kits away in the attic. When he gave them to me several years ago I had already built most of the M4 1/35 kits on the market. Imagine my surprise when this old Revell kit that was supposed to be 1/40 scale built up the same size as the Monogram Shermans I had. It is a nice kit especially when you think how long ago the molds were made.

I have 7 of the old 1950s Sherman's in my war and I also think they are great. I have been playing with them outside for more than 40 years and the are still not broken. I have up gunned several of them. There is one shown with other companies M4s in a picture on this page Action 29.
