Hera

By: Kate Hurni

Hera, worshipped as the upholder of marrige, is the supreme goddess of Olympus. She is constantly jealous and watchful of Zeus. She is portrayed as vengeful and sly.

THE MYTH

Zeus and Hera fought constantly. Never fully trusting her, he would ask her advice and tell her secrets ,but always carefully. If Hera went to far in her scheming ways, Zeus would hurl lighting bolts at her in anger. Zeus became to vain, so Hera gathered all the Olympians ( except Hestia) and tied him up with a thong of one hundred knots so that he could not move. When he awoke he found himself bound by the thong. With rage, he threatened to take everyone’s life, but his lighting bolt was out of reach. Thetis feared that Zeus might precipitate a war so he went and found Briadreus who had one hundred-handed. They quickly hurried back to Zeus and untied him. When Zeus was free he hung Hera to the sky, chained by golden bracelets on her wrists with anvils on her ankles. Finally Zeus decided to let her go, but she had to promise never to do it again.
