Choosing And Naming A Kitten
Choosing a kitten can be great fun - but before decide there are some serious questions to be considered.
Firstly be sure that you want a new kitten. We are not saying that if you want a cat you must get a kitten, an adult cat will make just as good a pet, and remember a kitten will grow up. Some of the best cats i have had, came to me as adults. But if you are looking to get a new kitten or you have a cat that is about to give birth its only natural that you'll want them to have the best start in life.
Which kitten?
Before you choose a kitten , take a good look at the mother as well. If she seems listless or unwell, there's a chance that her kittens will be in poor condition, too. Watch the litter playing together, and go for a kitten which a lively nature, that leaps and bounds around. Pick the kitten up and check that his eyes are bright, and there is no sign of the inner eyelid; ears are clean; and the teeth and gums are healthy. Look though the fur for any sign of fleas. A cat should not be removed from his mother until fully weaned which is around eight weeks old.
When looking for a kitten it is a good idea to visit a shelter instead of a pet shop, one of the animal protection societies will be more than glad to supply a kitten and you can be sure of getting an healthy cat. If you are looking for a pedigree then go to a known breeder.
Naming Your kitten:
Choosing a name for your kitten is something that all the family can get involved in. Try to match the name of your kitten with his or her character. Here are a few of my personal favorites.
