Essential Equipment
Before you bring your new friend home, stock up on a few items to make him or her feel welcome.
Among the essentials are a warm bed, feeding bowls, a litter tray, grooming tools, a travelling basket, lots of love and affection.
By the time they are six to eight weeks old and eating solid foods regularly, kittens should be given individual feeding bowls, which must be cleaned thoroughly before every meal. It is also a good idea to put newspaper under the bowls to avoid messes on the floors.
A wire basket allows your kitten to study the world outside, while staying safe and secure. Always line the basket with a blanket for extra comfort.
A brush and a comb are all you need to keep a shorthaired cat looking smart, although for longhairs you may need extra brushes and combs and will also take up more of you time.
Put a collar on your cat as soon as he starts going out, though he may object at first. A name and address tag is a must incase he gets lost or wanders far from home. The coller should not be loose, one finger between the cat and the collar is fine. If the collar is loose the cat can easily be caught while climbing etc and can cause injury. Check that you can move a finger between cat and collar weekly.
Kittens love playing games so make sure he has plenty of toys to keep him happy. Here is a list of some of the toys i have found a lot of kittens love to play with:
A ping-pong ball or a small ball of wool, tightly wound with one end left loose are always firm favorites, teach your cat to run and attack and playing football with him before long he will soon have you out maneuvered.
A toy mouse is also a favorite, whether they be clockwork or just a basic variety,
If your kitten is fascinated by water, and a lot of cats are, putting a shallow container of cool water outside on a hot day with a cork floating on top is sure to keep him busy
A short length of string with a cork should keep him or her busy for a while.
A kitten will find just about anything of interest and anything that moves, makes a noise, or can be tossed in the air is fair game to a kitten and he will always find something to amuse himself.
