Drug Interactions
Many people with Parkinson's take Eldepryl (also known by trade name Deprenyl and generic name Selegiline HCl). This is a selective mono-amine oxidase inhibitor type B which has interactions with many other medications, both of the prescription and over-the-counter variety.
Double-check with your doctors and pharmacist (chemist) before taking any new medications! Read through the printed material packaged with the medication!
A database that gives a thorough treatment of interactions, prepared and maintained by John Cottingham and other Parkinsonians, is available for you to puruse. NPF's list of contraindicated medications is also available. A booklet on interaction between food and drugs is now available from the National Consumer League. The following is a list of drugs not recommended for people with Parkinsons, taken from a card published by APDA; alas, it shows only U.S. trade names and only drugs available in the U.S. DRUGS CONTRAINDICATED FOR PARKINSON'S DISEASE PATIENTS
The term "contraindicated" essentially means that the drug in question
should not be given to a Parkinsonian. In Parkinson's disease, the basic
problem is the chemical nature of the disease itself. Many drugs alter
the brain's dopamine system and may not be recognized as having a potential
detrimental effect on Parkinson's disease simply because the drugs are
employed for the treatment of other conditions. All patients with
Parkinson's disease should have a list of these drugs available for their
physician's reference and for emergency situations.
This list was compiled by Paul A. Nausieda, MD, Director of the APDA
Information & Referral Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 1800-972-5455.
The American Parkinson Disease Association, Inc. is making this list
available in an effort to reduce problems that may be caused by these
drugs in patients with Parkinson's disease.
