Nutrition and Eating

Nutrition is especially important for a person with Parkinson's. Certain foods may affect people with Parkinson's in other ways than they affect others, and there are a bunch of things to look out for that wouldn't be of much concern to others. The Atkins diet, for example, could be a problem for people who use levodopa - because it is recommended that your diet be seven parts carbohydrate to one part protein - that's enough to shake the foundation of an old beefeater like me.

Kathrynne Holden, already a learned nutritionist, has made some extensive studies about Parkinson's and nutrition. When I met Ms. Holden and heard her speak about nutrition and Parkinson's, I was very impressed by the many nuances of nutrition; and I don't see how it could be adequately summarized here. One could write a book on it. Kathrynne has: "Eat Well, Stay Well with Parkinson's Disease.

Although there are useful pamphlets available from the foundations (q.v.) on the subject, I recommend Kathrynne's book as a comprehensive source. Kathrynne has also published a cookbook for people with Parkinson's: "Cook Well, Stay Well with Parkinson's Disease."

Nutrition Matters, a short form of her book, is available on the Web, courtesy of NPF.

Fava Beans, often mentioned as a possible source of dopamine, are discussed here by Mrs. Holden.
