to the left is the mysterious man who built Coral Castle
single handedly. His name is Edward Leedskalnin. Ed was a
native of Latvia and was born in 1887. His formal
education ended with the fourth grade. In 1913 Ed left
Latvia and within a few years had made his way to Canada Somewhere between 1918 and 1920 Ed arrived in Florida and settled around Homestead, Florida. Legend has it that when his 16 year old fiancee, Agnes Scuffs, broke off their engagement on the eve of their wedding, he emigrated to the US and once settled began labouriously carving his memorial to Agnes, whom he called "Sweet Sixteen." Ed worked in Washington state as a logger until tuberculosis forced him to a warmer climate. while wandering South Florida, Ed encountered a couple near Florida city who took him in and provided medical care. After he regained his health, Ed decided to settle. He bought a rocky acre, and soon mystery surrounded the 5 foot, 100-pound man. He read books on magnetic currents and cosmic forces by day, and by night carved huge blocks of coral from his land

But What is Coral Castle ? |

Coral
Castle is a fortress-like complex constructed of massive
coral blocks, many of which exceed five tons. these are
imaginatively arranged and fit together to form a central
courtyard surrounded entirely by dominating walls.
Entrance is made through a gate fashioned from a single
coral block weighing nine tons. (See picture to the left)
This miraculous monolith is approximately 80 inches wide,
92 inches tall, and 21 inches thick. It fits to within a
quarter of an inch of the walls on either side and pivots
through an iron rod resting on an automobile gear. the
enormous block balances so perfectly on it's centre of
gravity that a visitor can easily push it open with one
finger. Modern construction engineers are at a loss to
explain how such a precision object could have been set
with such a high level of precision. another gate, this
one a great triangle, at the opposite wall, weighs three
tons.
