Egg donation - for donors |
The normal recovery period from a general anaesthetic is only a few hours, but you will be kept in hospital for as long as you need to recover. You will need to arrange for someone to pick you up from hospital and will normally be advised not to travel too far that day.
It should take anything from a couple of days to a week to recover from the collection procedure itself. Mostly it is undertaken by trans-vaginal ultrasound. This is a delicate procedure but even so you may feel bruised and uncomfortable to begin with. This should wear off in time. Collections undertaken by laparotomy (making a small cut on your belly) will leave a cut and stitches. This will need time to heal and may leave a small scar.
If several days have gone by and you are still not feeling better, or if you develop symptoms which might indicate you have got an infection (eg pain, fever) then contact your GP or the clinic. When in doubt, get reliable medical advice.
Following appropriate medical advice, you should be able to start taking the pill on your first period after the treatment has finished. You will probably be advised not to have penetrative sex or use tampons until you have had your first period after the procedure, to minimise the risk of infection.
There is some anecdotal evidence to suggest that donors are more likely to have multiple births if they conceive within one or two cycles of having treatment - there is a suggestion that the stim drugs stay in your system. However I can't find any evidence for or against this so far.
