Steven Jones shows off this gorgeous Commanche Perd that he just uncovered.
Jerry Vincent found a Uvalde point! Not to be outdone, Robert Green found this nice
Nolan!
We had the New President of the Texas Council of Treasure Hunters , Leslie Hamilton and his Dad, Martin Hamilton. They are shown here with a couple of their nice finds. Leslie holds a Nolan and Martin uncovered a knife.
Bill Cox is hard to skunk on a dig! He found a nice Crescent blade with what looks like a Pedernales base on it.
Johnny Kuzenka let his presence be known when he pulled out this SUPER Langtry!
"WEASEL" Steve Jones, found a sweet little Marshall at his feet!
Weasel is the Grandson of Steven Jones, shown earlier. What a great thing
for both these fellows to enjoy together! (See Weasel, I told you that I was
going to make you famous! haha)
Some people just have a natural nose for finding artifacts. Johnny Kuzenka is one of them!
Look at this super Castroville he found in an area that we had already abandoned!
Things slowed down until Mike Wolff added this gorgeous RED Covington blade to his collection!
The dark spots are calcite. A lime deposit from the
years of being buried with the burned limestone rocks in the midden.
Bob Bonneau found this flint "draw knife" of sorts. It was probably
used to deflesh hides stretched over a log.
Unique and beautiful! That is how we will describe this next awesome artifact that Jerry Vincent found! If you think what you are looking at is a pretty artifact, wait until you see it washed off!!! The material appeared to be airbrushed. It showed colorful spatterings all throughout the stone.
...and then we washed it off!
Look at that crystal clear tip! Awesome!
Danny Spencer found a nice knife form. But then he found another most unusual find!!!
Danny found this 3 inch artifact growing out of a root!
Now that is unbelievable! The base was broken on the piece but it probably would have been a huge and beautifully worked Castroville had it all been there!

![]() Gilbert Hedge is always looking... he raked up a couple!
![]() BJ kept everyone's hopes alive as he found a Swallow tailed Marcos.
![]() ![]() In case you do not recognize this guy, it is John Weidmann.... the same fellow that found the 5 1/2 base tang two digs ago. John pulled another nice knife out! Nothing to it, huh John? He was banished from the mound by his fellow hunters! HAHA
![]() When he is hot he is hot! John finds another one! This was the first of several Williams points found that weekend.
![]() More Okie luck, Mike Welch found his first one. As we were about to find out this was just a practice find!
MANY WOULD SAY THAT THIS IS A "FIND OF A LIFETIME"!
Mike raked this Orange and Yellow heat treated beauty up. Look at the beveling in the last shot as the user resharpened the Covington as he skinned his Buffalo!
![]() Jerry Vincent got hot after seeing the blade come out and got busy finding a couple of his own! A Bulverde and Marcos point!
Gilbert Hedge checked Saturday afternoon with some nice points.
3 Williams, a knife, an Angostura! (The first for this site, we did find
a Hell Gap earlier) & a nice larger dart point!
Gilbert has never been skunked at the Coons Bluff site!
![]() ![]() Here is John Weidemann knife and nice Williams

Jerry Vincent found a strange but beautiful point/knife. Look at it with the dirt washed off...
![]() ![]() BJ Davis found a nice Langtry!
Then one of our silent diggers struck pay dirt!
Dale Rainwater found this awesome knife BUT as this dig went, most of those that found a nice piece found another and Dale was about to find his "Find of A Lifetime!"
I KNEW THAT DALE HAD FOUND SOMETHING REALLY FINE WHEN HE LOOKED UP AT ME ON THE BACKHOE FROM HIS KNEELING POSITION .... HE JUST GAVE ME A SMILE AND SHOOK HIS HEAD IN A POSITIVE WAY.... "A FIND OF A LIFETIME!"
![]() Mike Welch found this beautiful Milling stone with matching double manos near where Dale found the Pedernales knife!
Great find!
Terri Young found these two nice artifacts, a Pedernales and a Pandale hand digging.
She lost a nice Frio on the way to the truck!
That just about rounded up last weeks dig! I must apologize for not putting the prior weeks dig photos up, I HAVE MISPLACED THE DISKS! I will find them and add the photos soon!

COONS BLUFF DIG - JANUARY 27 & 28TH
Here are the finds from last weekends dig! If the photos look a little dark and cold it is because it was! Low of 30 and High of 40 with an occasional light mist or shower. Actually, we all dressed well for the dig and it was not too bad. We even built a ceremonial fire!
A total of 8 complete knives were found on this dig! We are just now getting into the heart of the mound. Be sure and visit this site before it is all gone.
I have been predicting a 5 inch corner tang or a full Andice to come out of this versatile mound.
We came close with Carla Cox's 5"+ blade this weekend!
SIGN UP NOW FOR NEXT WEEKENDS DIG!
... and then!!!!!!!!!!!!! CARLA COX COMES UP WITH THE FIND OF THE DAY!
From Left to Right:
#1 The Crew looks on as Carla is shaken as she pulls this fine 5"+ Covington from the dirt!
#2 Carla gives out a smile when the realization of what she has found starts to sink in!
#3 A close up, just as it came out of it ancient hiding place!
#4 Brother Bill Cox, gives Sis a hand and washes the beautiful find off!
#5. The mud comes off and reveals this gorgeous artifact, translucent, with a bulls eye and needle tip!
#6. One happy TAAA digger! Congratulations Carla!
THE COX FAMILY IS ON A ROLL! IT IS NOW BILLS TURN TO PULL OUT ANOTHER COVINGTON!
Silently, hand digging Don Fabrygel is piling up the artifacts beside his hole!
Blade number three comes out for us Saturday morning. Look at the nice flaking on this piece. Don dug this piece about 5 feet deep!
Now who is lucky? Pat Even was cleaning out her hole to dig when she found this sweet Friday blade! Blade # 4 for the morning!
John Weidmann Scores!
![]() I have not checked on Don for a while and he is being real quite, so I slip over to his "Cellar"! and presto, the artifacts are piling up! The second photo does not do this broken piece justice. There is 1/2 of a what would have been a bandanna shaped crescent knife!!! Go Don!
Steve Feldman starts finding some 'facts! A scriber and a possible Marcos point!
Then just about when we thought he was done Steve drug out another nice piece. Possibly a Pedernales or a Bulverde point. This one is hard to ID.
Gilbert Hedge had been kind of quite so I went over and raked beside him. He pulled out this Paisano right before my eyes! After that every time I got around Gilbert he found something!
Like all good husbands, Buzz Even could not let Pat beat him, so he pulled out this base tang knife while digging beside her! Of course he had to make the long ride home with her! HAHA
Walt Scarborough found the last point of the day! But it was no ordinary point! This is a Round Base Lerma folks. The Lerma has been found in Archaic and Paleo sites. This particular piece could easily be 8000 years old but they have been found in late archaic sites also. The photos do not do this fine artifact justice. It was coated with limestone (known as calcite) which did not allow the fine flaking to show. Hopefully Walt will let us photograph it again when it is cleaned!
John Weidmann pulled out this artifact towards the end of the day. John also dig some hand digging in the center of the mound and pulled two 3" knives out of that hole (sorry we did not get a photo of those) making a total of 8 knives found on the day!
![]() ![]() Gilbert hedge with the
last blade of the day!
We are working to open a new site on another creek at this same property (6 sections large!). The owner Mike Hamilton brought a nice Brazos point that he found on the surface while checking for new sites!
Dig Before Last!
Coons Bluff - Mertzon, Texas ( 23 miles out of San Angelo on Hwy. 67 S. )

This weekend a new digger, old member came to his first dig. He found a find of a lifetime, a true Texas cache. I have moved that story to a page of its own! The following dig (Jan. 27th & 28th 2001) Walt added to this story by finding another find, see what it is... go to <This link's target cannot be found>
NOW, THE REST OF THE AWESOME FINDS!
Mark Petter - 4” Translucent Perfect Friday knife! Perfect HELL GAP!
Natalie Petter - Found 3 points in row, two complete and one Langtry with the tip missing!

Walt Scarborough - Besides fining the Snub Nose Cache! Nice Chadbourne Bird Point!
![]() John Weidemann - Perfect Paisano!
![]() Gilbert Hedge - Perfect Martindale Knife and a rare Jetta (NOT SHOWN)!
DUE TO DISK FAILURE IN MY CAMERA THE FOLLOWING PHOTOS ARE NOT AVAILABLE! BUMMER!
Danny Spencer found a hand full of points, mostly with tip damage but he did find one awesome perfect, symmetrical and translucent Frio! Cliff Linney found a nice Covington looking blade/tool with lots of use polish on it! Kent Ashenfelter found mostly broken points and a nice well worked mano. He joked that he had his photo taken more than anyone that day - because he was always in the background when I photographed other finds! HAHA Terri Lowell found a large 6 inch + knife, made on a flake and was sculpted to fit the users hand by the maker! ...and me, Bob Mc Williams even found a beautiful thin Frio with great flaking and translucent (unfortunately the tip was missing!) Many other broken points were found boy some of our other diggers including Cliff Linney and Steve Watkins.
