Raymond J. Caffrey

FBI Special Agent. He was born in McCook, Nebraska. Prior to joining the FBI, Caffrey attended Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska and was admitted to the Nebraska Bar. Before being assigned to Kansas City, Caffrey worked in FBI field offices in Boston and Charlotte. On June 17, 1933, Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Special Agent Caffrey was dispatched to assist in the escort of Frank Nash, member of the infamous Barker Gang, back to Kansas City for his transfer to the prison in Leavenworth, Kansas. He along with fellow officers and FBI agents were killed at Union Station that fateful day. Raymond J Caffrey's body was laid to rest in an open casket for a couple of days in the dining room of his parents home in Omaha, Neb. He was buried at the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Omaha Nebraska. His wife Regina and son Raymond J. were devastated by his death. Young Raymond was sent off to spend the summer with his relatives on a farm in Nebraska. His wife Regina shortly after her husbands death went on to work with the FBI in Kansas and by the time her son Raymond was 16 joined her also. His son, Raymond J. Caffrey at age 81 said that he did not believe anything regarding the stories that fateful day except that his father apparently was killed by friendly fire.
