 New York, Banner Part 4

A couple of hours later, they made it to downtown New York City.  Everyone was shocked at how busy rush hour was except for Max who had been in New York before.  Being in the city again kind of made him sick since last time he had almost been killed but he knew it was the only safe place, if they could ever be safe again.  They drove around for a while before pulling up next to a run down motel.  Max shut off the van and Liz looked behind her for what seemed like the hundredth time.  Max gave her a funny look and she simply said, “I think we are being followed again.”

“Is it Vindilo?” Max asked.

“No, I don't know who it is.” Liz answered.

"OK, Maxwell I say we leave this place and don't come back.” Michael said.

Max turned the ignition in the van again and pulled away from the curb, watching the black sedan behind him the whole time.  When Max was all the way away from the curb the black sedan started pulling out too.

“I have a feeling that Liz was right,” Kyle said.

“You think?” Isabel said sarcastically.

Max turned around on the road and the sedan turned too.  After about five minutes Max sped up and the sedan did too.  Max quick turned the van onto an alley and lost the sedan.

“I think we lost him.” Maria said just as the sedan rounded the corner.

“I don't think so,” Max answered as he pushed the van to the limit.

“Buddha says that we should...” Kyle started as Isabel smacked him across the arm.  Kyle shut up as soon as he found out how hard Isabel could smack.

Going through the alley way Max watched the speedometer go up and up and up.  50, 60, 70 75, 80!  They were going 80 miles a hour and headed straight for a guard rail by a lake.

“Oh crap!” Michael yelped.

Max spun the van into a turn just in time to miss the guard rail by inches.  He looked back behind him and saw that the black sedan was still heading full speed at the guard rail.  As he watched, the driver saw the rail at the last instant and tried to turn the wheel too late.  In a matter of seconds the sedan was crushed again the rail at a dead stop.  Max started to slow down.

“Maxwell you have to keep going. What if that is an alien or and FBI agent and he is miraculously still alive?” Michael said.

Max didn't like the idea of leaving the sedan there but he knew Michael was right. They couldn't risk it.  He found another alley way and turned into it.  He stopped the van and this time it turned a deep red and the license plate numbers and letters rearranged themselves to say “Hi Evry1.”
About 15 minutes after running a black sedan into a guard rail at top speed the gang pulled up in front of an elegant looking motel, complete with marble bricks and an oak door and door frame.

“How are we supposed to get in and get a room?  We don't have any money.” Maria said.

"We could walk in and pretend like we are here for a birthday party or something.” Kyle answered.
“And whose birthday do you suppose it is?” Michael said sarcastically.

“OK that won't work,” Kyle said after a moment, “But we have to somehow get a room, and make sure that nobody else gets it.”

“Most hotels have a computer and if they do then I can mess it up and get us a room.” Isabel suggested.  “OK, that could work, but first we need to see what rooms are even available.” Maria said.
“Well, Nasedo taught me how to change my fingerprints so maybe I could change my appearance like a shape shifter and help Isabel.” Michael suggested.  “I won't have enough energy to do it all on my own so maybe Kyle could help me with that.”

Kyle thought about it for a minute and then a thought came to mind.  “After you use too much energy you can't use your powers anymore.  What makes you think you can change yourself back?”

“I could help him.  We can add our powers to one another's to make them stronger so if I don't use a lot of mine I should have enough to get him back to looking normal.” Max suggested.
“OK, you aliens know nothing.  All of that would work but it doesn't change the fact that we still need to get the clerk away from the desk.” Maria said.

Everyone thought for a while.  Finally it was Liz that came up with the plan.

“I am a fairly good actress,” Liz started as Michael snorted behind her.  She turned to look at him.  “Well, I'm a much better actress than you will ever be a second in command, that's for sure.” she said a little peeved.

Michael just stared at her like he didn't know what to say.

“Anyway,” she continued, “if I can pretend like something is wrong with me, seriously wrong, then that might get the clerk away from his desk.  Maria can help me while you guys do what I tell you, exactly as I tell you.”

“And what are we supposed to do it if there is more than one clerk at the desk, Miss Know It All?” Michael asked finally recovering from the initial shock of Liz telling him he was a bad second in command.
“I guess we just hope that there isn't,” Liz replied.
