![]() Somewhere in America...
She sat at the kitchen window drinking her morning coffee, marveling at the energy the little boy had... he had been the miracle that they had prayed for. She was devastated when she found out that she could never have children, and with the waiting list so long, they figured adoption of an infant was almost impossible. Then came the call from an old college buddy of her husband, he was a lawyer from New York that had just been asked by a dear friend to find a good loving home for their grandchild. She felt a twinge of guilt, knowing the circumstances of his coming to them... His young mother dying in an explosion, and the father, also young, deciding that it would be best for him to be raised by a loving family. They would never know what he means to them, they would do anything to make him feel happy and loved.
She stood up, set down the cup and picked up his favorite Spiderman beach towel. Opening the screen door on the back porch, she walked down the steps. "Hey little man, ready for a swim?"
He looked up, his dark hair, something from his father, was tousled as usual, and the blue eyes, a gift from his mother, lit up at the sound of going swimming. He came running to her, lifting his arms to be picked up.
"You know, you're getting awfully big... you'll be four next week! Are you ready for your birthday party?"
"Yep, I want a pony!"
"A pony? Well, maybe a puppy this year. Would that be all right?"
"All wight!" He giggled that sweet little giggle only a three year old could make. She put her mouth on the base of his neck and blew, making the little raspberry sound that always set him off. And as if on cue it did just that - the deep belly laugh that could make the grumpiest person smile. Then she noticed it... something strange, she didn't think it had been there before. A strange group of freckles had come from nowhere on his chest, just to the left of his heart. She had never seen a group of freckles form the shape of a V before... oh well, he was young, and kids are always getting new things like that, so she let it pass.
"You're getting to be such a big boy, how about you walk over to the pool all by yourself?"
"Okay!" With that he took off running around the corner. As she caught up to him, she saw it in the little plastic pool. It looked like a young bird, one that was just learning to fly, had fallen and drown, and before she could stop him, he jumped in the pool to get it.
"No baby, I think the poor little thing drowned, maybe he was trying to get home to his momma."
"No" he shook his head as he hugged the bird to his chest “Him be okay, see!"
Her mouth fell open in amazement.... the dead bird had come to life and flew away.....
