For the Love of the Children, Banner #7

Back in Roswell...

The car pulls up in front of a familiar house, Max sighs, remembering all the things that went down here.  His last memories of this place were of the day he watched his parents drive off with his son, taking him to a normal life.  Now, it seems that would all be undone, he had to find him again, time was catching up with him... he would soon be celebrating his fourth birthday.  According to Zia that could only mean one thing and if it hadn't started already, it soon would.   They walked up the steps to the front door, Liz holding his hand, knowing what was in his heart.   She rang the bell, knowing he didn't feel right to just walk in, they waited.  Then the door opened, Diane Evans looks as if she is seeing a ghost, then there was the smile Max remembered, then the  tears of joy.  She grabs them, with the strength of a mother lion guarding her young.

"When you did... why are you..."  She was at a lose for words, something Max had never seen before.  "Is everything all right?  Is it safe for you to be here... I just don't know where to begin."  Suddenly she becomes pale, "Oh God, it's not Isabel, is she...?"

"Everything is fine, Mom... well, not fine, but as good as can be expected, I guess." Max says as he wraps arms around her to reassure her that he was actually standing there.  "I really need to talk to Dad, something has come up about Zan, something important, I have to find him, and his life may depend on it."

With the mention of her first grandchild, Diane suddenly remembered there was a new Evans member.
"Kids, where's the baby... is she okay?"

"She's fine...  Mom..."  Liz says, hesitating, this is the first time she had talked to Max's mother since they got married, and she didn't know what Mrs. Evans would say about being called that.

"Mom... I like it, it's nice to have another daughter... I think you are the best thing to have ever happened to Max.  He seems to be completed when he's with you."  She reaches up to touch Max's face, seeing tears in his eyes, tears of happiness that two of the most important women in his life will always be behind him.  "When can I see her?  I want to spoil that little one!"

"She's at the Valentis' `` Diane gives them a strange look, wondering why they have chosen to leave the baby with someone besides family.  "It's safer for her there, Jim and Kyle, well they are... they are..."  Max begins to answer, not knowing exactly how to explain it to her.

"They're just di...different, now” explains Liz, "It's a long story, but we'll tell you later.  Right now we must really talk to... Dad." she says with a slight blush.

"He should be home anytime now.  Let me get you something to drink, eat, what ever you need."  She sighs, not wanting to take her eyes off of them, afraid it was all a dream.

"We're fine, how are things here?  Was there any trouble after we left?  We were so afraid for you guys."

"We had a rough few days after, but things died down.  Liz, thank you, for the journal... if we had only known..."

"We never told you, not because we didn't want to... you saw what happened... we wanted to keep you safe."  Max looks at Liz, for reassurance and because he could never get enough  of her.  How could he have ever thought that they were anything but true soul mates? She is his life, he could have all the money or kingdoms for that matter, but without her in his life he would be the poorest man alive...
At the Valentis...

Zia is sitting cross-legged on the floor, her waist length hair in a braid down the middle of her back, baby Claudia tucked securely in the little "nest" that her crossed legs made.  The baby was wide awake, staring with large brown eyes at the swirl of toys Zia made spin over her head.  Kyle was just about to say something when  a sneeze erupted, then came the loud crash from the kitchen! "Damn!"   Zia laughed, shaking her head at Jim's out burst.

"Did I do that?  What ever it was..." Kyle asked her, "He'll kill me if I start destroying the place as soon as I get back."

"I don't think..."  Zia starts to say.

"Okay Lady!  You're supposed to be some kind of teacher, what am I going to do about this???  I can't afford to keep destroying my house this way!"

"I don't think you have anything to worry about, Kyle... your father is doing that job all by himself." She finishes.  Still shaking her head, she watches as Jim comes into the room.  He's holding a bag of broken glass and what was left of one of the cabinets.

"Buddha says..." suddenly, out of the corner of his eye, he catches one of those looks Isabel used to give him when he quoted Buddha too much.  "Ah... never mind.  I'll go clean up the mess, it's the least I can do."  He quickly escapes to the kitchen.  "Jees Dad, what the heck did you do? Maybe it isn't safe for you to carry that gun!"

"One more word out of you and you're grounded!"

Kyle sticks his head out of the kitchen, just in time to duck the flying towel Jim had brought into the living room.

Jim watches as Zia holds her hand over the spinning toys, and watches them slowly lower themselves into a small pile.

"Don't worry; you'll get the hang of it soon."  She reaches over and pats him on the hand.  Jim feels a warm tingle and sees the flashing of planets fly through his mind.

"Whoa!"

"Cool, huh?  Just wait, the best is yet to come."  She says winks and stands up holding the sleeping baby...
The Evans house...

"So, you're saying this woman is from.... your... your..."

"Planet, you can say it, Dad, its okay.  Yes, she is a hybrid like us, our aunt, she was sent here to help guide us through all this."

"Why has she stayed away all this time?"  Diane asks as she hands Phillip a cup of coffee. "If she is so important in all this, why stay away so long?"

"She had to wait for the right time, I don't know, all I know is she's here and says we must know what's going on with Zan.  Dad, I know that it's nearly impossible to find adopted kids, but we must find him."

"I'll call my friend, the one that arranged the adoption... I'll tell him something, maybe that there is something in the past medical history we need to have checked.  That might be our best bet to get the information."  He picks up his coffee and heads to his office.

After what seemed like an eternity,   Phillip Evans emerges from his office.  A somber look on his face,
"I had to do some fast talking, but I have an address..."
