![]() Max and Liz looked at each other and mouthed the words "Max?" Liz saw a gate that led to the back yard and pointed. As they ran through the gate, Max prepared himself to use his energy field to protect his son, he didn't care that it would expose him, he would do anything to keep his son safe.
They rounded the corner running, just in time to see Karen reach up into the low branches of the tree to grab the boy. Liz and Max came to screeching halt when they saw that it was a false alarm, just as they did the woman turned around.
"Who are you?!" She asked holding the little boy close to her, not knowing what to do about these strangers in her yard, "What do you want?"
Before they could answer, the little boy broke away from his mother and ran towards them. "Max, come back here NOW!" She took off after him. She almost got to him, almost...
"Daddy!" Liz and Max looked at each other as the little boy grabbed Max's legs in a hug. The motion caught Max off guard and he ended up on the ground, much to the little boy's delight. He took advantage of having the upper hand and jumped onto Max's lap just as Max was getting his balance. Suddenly the little boy had Max's face between his sand covered little hands, looking him directly into the eyes. "Where have YOU been? I have been waiting to see you for soooo long!" The three adults just looked at each other, amazed...
Back in Roswell...
"Okay, alien lesson 101, you must realize that the powers are inside YOU..." Zia pointed at both Kyle and Jim. "You can control them; you just have to take your time."
"Easy for you to say, you're not putting chairs in the wall and blowing up the kitchen."
"Yea, but Dad, I guess it beats the alternative" Kyle holds up both hands palm side up, like a scale, raising one side then the other, in a balancing motion "Being dead or being alien, being dead or being alien...I like to think it's a no brainer."
"I guess if you put it that way, I'll learn how to deal with it, maybe” Jim sighed as Zia looked on grinning. These humans amazed her, they complained but accepted what was happening to them willingly, though some more willingly than others.
"You each will have powers different from the each other, some you will have in common, like my nephew and niece... you won't necessarily be a balanced pair as they are, but you will learn to master them." She placed her hand on Jim's back, as if to try to ease his frustration, suddenly the flashes shoot through them both... planets, stars, the two of them floating, intense person feelings, something neither had ever experienced before...
"Whoa" this time it was Zia making the comment as she looked at Jim. "Yea..." was all he could say.
"Jees guys, if this is an alien flirting thing... I'm going for a walk, it's getting way too intense here." He grabs his jacket and walks out the door.
"What is all this I keep seeing? It's like being jolted with a thousand watts of electricity..."
She turned to look at him, a slight blush on her face, "You're seeing our future."
Back to the back yard...
Karen looked from the stranger to her son, and then suddenly she realized the faces were the same. The same dark hair and the same brown eyes. "You are his father aren't you? Why are you here?"
Max gently sets his son on the ground beside him, and stands up. "Yes, I am. There something I must know, has he seemed different lately, doing th...things?"
"I... I think..." Karen doesn't know what to say, so many things about her son had changed lately, beginning with the color of his eyes, the baby bird, the v shaped freckles.
Neither one had noticed that little Max had taken Liz's hand and walked with her to the sandbox, where his toys laid in a small heap. "Watch what I can do." he whispers to Liz, pulling her down to his level. Something told him he could trust this woman, that she would understand his special secrets. With that he starts to make the toys float and spin again. "I don't tell no one, I fink I am a wittle difwent... is that okay?"
Liz hugs him to her "Oh, yes that's quite okay, you are a very special little boy. I've got a secret too; I'm different just like you." He looks deep into her eyes, then grins "I know."
Liz turns around, the toys are still floating, she says just one word "Max."
Max and Karen turn at the sound of the name, Karen stands there staring as a group of toys are floating in the air. Max and Liz exchange knowing looks, and smile at each other.
They were sitting around the kitchen table, the four of them. Karen had called her husband at work, he had come home immediately. During this time she had put little Max in for a nap, made a pot of coffee and took a couple of aspirin, she felt a major headache coming on.
"So you're saying... what?" Doug asked
"I don't know what to tell you. It's something that could cause trouble if word was to get out, no one can know this... this..." Max stumbled around not knowing how to put it.
Liz reached over to hold Max's hand, "Mr. Walker...”
"Doug, please, it's kind of silly to stand on formality at this stage of things." He looked over at the beautiful young woman. When he looked into her eyes, he saw the eyes of a person that had been through more than any one person should ever have to experience in four lifetimes.
"Doug, Max and I are concerned that things are starting to happen, things he never knew or even imagined could even happen. Your son, Max's son, will be getting stronger. Karen, what you have seen is only the beginning; we don't know where they will go."
"I just can't get over that you both have the same name. Who knew when we gave him my father's name that it would be so... so appropriate." She was changing the subject, not wanting to continue the conversation down the other path, a path that could only lead one way. She got up to pour more coffee, just something to do, to keep her mind occupied.
"Karen, sit, we must get this sorted out." He grabbed her hand, knowing what was going through her mind, it went through his too ~ they would be losing their son to this stranger, this man who had wanted his child to have a completely normal life. "Max, we must know the truth, if it's something bad or dangerous, we can work it out somehow. The only thing that's important is little Max's safety."
"Thank you,” was all he could say, the other couple looked at him questioningly, not knowing what to make of the last comment. "Thank you, for giving my son this wonderful home, it reminds me of the home my sister and I were taken into when we were adopted."
"You were adopted, too? I had an accident a few years ago, now I can't have children, your son was an answer to our prayers. But, now I know we will probably lose him, for his own good." tears started to come to Karen's eyes.
"I really don't want to go into the details of why your son is different,” Max was stalling, trying to find a way to keep from telling them the truth, "But you can trust me when I say, it would be better if you didn't know at all. Certain people would do anything, and I mean anything to find him, and they are not the kind of people YOU can take on... not here or a courtroom. People who are not... well, let's just say they are different too."
"Max, can you and Liz give us a few minutes alone? We need to figure out things, to sort through all of this."
"Sure" Max gets up, takes Liz's hand and they walk outside. Liz sat on the swing, digging the tip of her shoe into the sand, gently twisting the swing back and forth. She looked up to see Max watching her; she smiles at him, and then winks. "It'll be all right Max. They love him as much as you do, they'll do the right thing."
"I hope so. Oh, did I remember to tell you I love you?" He comes up in front of the swing; she stands up and wraps her arms around him, inhaling his scent.
Taking his face in her hands "You always say it, just by being you. I love you." She reaches up to give him a kiss.
From the kitchen window, Doug and Karen watch the young couple, young in years but so much older than their age, like they had shared another life together, in another place and time. Karen feels the tears coming again, “We have to let him go, I want him to be safe and I think they are his only way."
Doug and Karen go out to the yard, a look of knowing pass between the couples. With that one look they know they have made the right decision, their son, would get to go on to be who he was supposed to be. What that is they didn't know, and maybe Max was right, it was in every ones best interest that they didn't know, all they know is there will be an empty place in their heart with the going of this special child.
No one heard the approach of the little boy, he was so quiet, as if he knew his future, his destiny was now in the hands of the people who would raise him to be the man he was meant to be.
"Can we go home now Daddy?" was all he said. Max looked at his son and nodded.
They had packed the important things into Max's car and had put little Max in his car seat in the back.
"We'll be going in a minute. I want to say good bye. Okay?" "Okay."
Max and Liz approach the couple struggling to hold back their tears.
"Please know we will protect him, we have friends, "special friends" that will see to it that he stays safe. And we will always make sure he remembers you, the people that loved him enough to return him to make sure he would come to no harm." Max said. With that, he hugs Karen, placing his hand on her back. She feels a warmth spreading through her body, a strange healing warmth...
Six months later...
"Well, Karen, are you ready?"
She nodded; laying on the exam table the doctor spreads the cold jelly on her stomach. Then takes the wand that would bring the picture on the sonogram come to life. Doug takes her hand waiting for the news.
"My, my, it's a good thing Doug is here for this, because I don't think he'd believe it if he wasn't... to tell you the truth, I can't believe it myself. Can you see it; they look like they are growing just fine."
"They... did you say they?"
"You, my friends are going to be the parents of twins...congratulations!"
Karen and Doug look at each other and smile...
