One Fine Day - Shoo Bop! Shoo Bop!, Banner #5

They were having such a great day; they didn't even notice the sun had started going down.  Deciding it was time to head back to the motel, they start to go back to the van.  Michael sees the little boy making one more attempt to get that goldfish.  "Give me a minute, I have to do something."

"Okay, we'll wait here."  Michael walks off as the others watch.  "What's with him?"

"I don't know, there is just something about that kid." Maria answers.  "He's been watching him most of the day."
Michael stands off to the side so the family doesn't realize he's watching them.

"Well, this is the last of my money, all that you've spent trying to get that one little fish, you could have bought a whole aquarium full of fish."  The little boy's father ruffles his hair.

"I know dad, but he's lonely, I just know he wants to come home with me."  His father hands the man his last dollar, while the man gives the little boy three ping pong balls.  Michael watches as the first ball spins around the edge of the glass again, and then it rolls unto the ground  He sees the little boy's face start to fall, then he takes a deep breath and tosses the second ball, but that one pings off the edge of the glass two rows over.  The little boy looks like he's about to cry.

"Take good aim son, this is your last chance."  As the little boy gets ready to throw the ball, Michael reaches his hand up to rub the side of his face...the ball is a direct  hit - the goldfish just found a new home!

"I did it! I did it!!  Thank you Daddy! Thank you!"  As the man pours the fish into its bag Michael heads back over to join the others.

Okay, I'm ready."

A lady comes over to them, "You aren't leaving yet are you?  This is the best night of the celebration; we're having our Fourth of July fireworks.  They are the best in the county, won't you please stay?"
The Fourth of July?  They looked at each other, for them it wasn't a day they liked to celebrate; it had been almost 60 years since they had crashed near Roswell, a time when their future was being determined.

"Well...I guess, sure."  Max looks at the group, not being able to read Isabel and Michael's reaction to the news.  Liz reaches over and gives his hand a squeeze, knowing what this day means to him.  "A few more hours won't hurt anything."

"Great!  You'll just love them!"
Four hours later they were back on the road, tired but happy from the day.

Max was driving, Liz was riding in the passenger seat, getting ready to write in her journal, she looked back to see her "family."   Kyle was reading a book about Buddha, using one of those little clip on book lights, Isabel was starting to doze off, but she had a smile on her face for once.  Maria and Michael were sitting on the bench seat in the back, well, Maria was sitting, and Michael was stretched out with his head on her lap.  They were talking, and much to Liz's amazement, Michael actually seemed to be laughing.

"July 4th or should I say 5th, it is well past midnight so I guess you'd have to say the 5th.  It turned out to be a wonderful day.  Everyone is happy for a change; we had no threats of FBI or other assorted bad guys watching us today. So that in itself made the day worthwhile.

Michael seems to have a secret, not that he's telling anyone what it is, but it must be good because he has seemed full of himself since just before the fireworks.   He kept watching a little boy,   so whatever that   was all about, I think  had something to do with Michael's good mood.   Kyle and Isabel seemed to be getting closer, I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not, I'm just afraid he might get hurt.  But he knows that she loves Jesse, so hopefully he will be able to keep control of his feelings.

Max, well he's still Max, but a much happier or should I say, a more contented version and I love him more every day, if that's possible.  This day, the chance to actually get away from the alien chaos for just one day, made all the difference to him.  He's laughed more than I've seen for a long time. I think when we found out today was the Fourth of July, it hit them hard, Michael, Isabel and Max.  This day has got to be a sad day for them, there is so much they still don't know and I know how much that frustrates them.  Maybe one day, things will be different, they will know what they need to know and their journey will be complete.  But for now, we travel down the road, trying to do good in the world, hoping one day for a chance to go home, home to Roswell...
