![]() “The Dupes? Max are you sure?” Liz asked trying to be reasonable.
“I'm positive, I saw the name.”
“What name, Max? Whose name was it?” Isabel asked him.
“Rath's, it was Rath's name.”
“Maxwell, that doesn't mean that they are the dupes.”
“Michael, how many other people, that you know of, has the name of Rath?”
“Well I don't know very many people Max and we only grew up in Roswell.”
“Well how common is that name?”
“I don't know Maxwell!”
“That is the point! You don't know, you don't know because it isn't a common name! They are in room 25! One floor up by the great room. I will prove it to you Michael, to all of you!” he yelled as he walked out the door slamming it behind him.
“Max!” Liz yelled running after him. “Max, come back!”
“Stay out of it Liz! It doesn't involve you anymore, it never did!” he yelled back.
Liz stopped in her tracks trying not to cry. “Max, don't do anything stupid, or alien, or both. Please.” she whispered as Isabel ran past her and Maria gently guided Liz back into the hotel room.
Isabel finally caught up to her brother in a living area with a fireplace, leather chairs, and big screen TV. One look around she saw there were two people in there talking. She knew they would leave once they started arguing and it wasn't alien as far as they could tell anyway. For all they knew they were a fighting couple. “Max! Stop!” she yelled stepping in front of him. “What are you doing Max?”
“I am going to prove that they are here!”
“Oh really? And how were you planning on doing that? Oh, I know, you were just going to walk in and say “come with me. I know you only tried to kill me, but I need to prove that you are here”! Think Max!”
“I am thinking! I know exactly what I am doing!”
“Really? Tell me, Max, do you know what you just said to Liz?”
“Of course I do! And I meant every word of it!”
“Then tell me what you said Max! Tell me your exact words!”
“I said, I said…” he failed. “Damn,” he turned and tried to walk away again.
“Don't walk away from me Max! Listen to your heart rather than your mind. I don't know why you are acting like this but you aren't thinking straight. If you were you would not have said what you did to Liz. And you wouldn't have forgotten it.” she said as he tried to walk away again.
He stopped walking when he heard her say, “Don't leave me, Max. I couldn't take it if you left too.” He turned to find his sister had tears in her eyes. The sight of Isabel in tears stopped his angry retort and he pulled her close to him. “I am not going anywhere, Iz. I'm not leaving.”
“Then, let's go back to the room, Max.”
They both walked back to the room in silence. Isabel was thinking about everything she'd left behind when she left home. Max kept asking himself why he had acted like Michael. Was it the dupes or stress?
Max saw that Liz and Maria weren't in the room as soon as he opened the door. “Where is Liz?” he asked.
“In her room crying her eyes out.” Michael said simply getting a death look from Isabel.
He walked to the girls' room, he really needed to talk to Liz. Maria answered the door when he knocked. “I don't think you should be here Max.”
“I need to talk to Liz, please leave us alone.” he said.
“I can't.”
“It is ok, Maria. Let him in.”
She reluctantly moved to the side so he could get through then thought better of pushed past him on her way out.
Max closed the door behind her and turned to Liz. “Liz,”
“Don't Max. I don't want to hear it,” she said. “I tried to help you and you hurt me. I came with you, I gave up everything for you! And only for you to tell me that it doesn't involve me anymore. That it never did. If that is the case then why did I come?”
Max sank down on the bed across from Liz, he hated it when she was mad at him but he knew he deserved it. “I am sorry Liz, I truly am. I was acting, like, I don't know, I was acting like,”
“Michael? You were acting like Michael.”
“Yeah I was. I was acting worse than Michael. Irrational, irresponsible, and impulsive. I am sorry, I truly am.”
Liz could see he was telling the truth. He was being totally sincere. She went over and sat by him on the bed. “Remember when I promised I would always be here? Well I will be. I love you Max, I really do. But I can't keep going through this. This is the last time; you need to promise that you will try not to hurt me anymore.”
“I promise.” he said looking at her soft brown eyes. He stood up and they walked back to the other room hand in hand. Maria and Isabel stood up as they walked in but saw everything was ok and sat back down.
“I would like to apologize for everything that happened earlier. I didn't mean it and I don't know what got into me.” Max said.
“That's ok, just don't do it again.” Kyle said wagging his finger at Max as everyone laughed.
“Ok all joking aside what are we going to do about the Dupes, assuming of course they are really here.” Michael asked.
“What do you think we should do?” Max asked throwing the question back at him.
“I think we need to leave.” Isabel said.
“I think that we have to do something not nothing, all we ever do is run and hide. We should do something not nothing!” Michael argued.
“Cool your jets, Space boy. We aren't doing nothing we are avoiding them.” Maria said.
“That it is the point Maria! We are always avoiding someone or something. We never take control of the situation!”
“Ok, Michael, you are the second in command, what do you propose we do?” Max asked calmly.
“I think we should get rid of them, Maxwell.”
“But...” Maria started.
“Hey, I'm not finished.” he said cutting Maria off. “Since we can't do that without making a scene does anyone have any other suggestions?” He waited for a moment but nobody said anything. “Since nobody can come up with anything I think we just leave it alone and not worry about it.”
“But that is still doing nothing Michael.” Max said trying not to laugh. He didn't dare look at anyone else because he knew that the looks on their faces would be enough to make him laugh so hard he would be knocked out by Michael.
“Yeah I know, Maxwell. I just figured that since that is the only plan we might as well go with it.”
“Right, Michael. Great idea.” Max said.
“So it is settled then,” Isabel said regaining her composure. “We are going to sit back and do nothing.”
“No not nothing.” Kyle said.
