![]() In End of the World, Liz asks Kyle if he saw things ... flashes. Kyle says no. But this is the first time that Liz has told us that she had flashes when Max HEALED her. That means that the reverse connection could not have been the trigger and/or the healing followed by the reverse connection also could not have been the trigger. So it had to be the healing or "something else". The question still remains, why does Liz have flashes and Kyle, Maria, and Alex don't? What does Liz and Max share that the rest don't? This is more a relationship story with just a hint of sci-fi to be continued. I put aside theory for this one.
To the possible storyline which picks up from End of the World:
It's Friday night, one week later. Max is doing chin-ups in his bedroom. He keeps seeing Liz and Kyle in his head. Liz is in her bedroom. She's trying to study, but she's restless. She keeps envisioning Max at the window. She closes her book and stares long at the window knowing he won't come again. Her stomach is in knots. She closes the book.
Time passes. Max is standing outside the Crashdown. He sees the light in Liz's room and catches her shadow ever so briefly. He turns and walks away. Liz climbs out to the rooftop. She peers over the edge. She sees something but she's not sure what? Is it Max or just a shadow?
It's the next day. The Crashdown is busy with the breakfast crowd. Liz is at one of the tables trying to do bookkeeping for the restaurant since her parents were out of town for the weekend, but she can't concentrate. She's looking off into space, listless. Maria is waiting tables, but she's been watching her friend. She knows that Liz had been avoiding Max, that she was trying to get him together with Tess, but this felt very different. Maria sits down opposite Liz and asks her if she is okay. Liz shakes her head, but says nothing. Isabel, Michael, and Tess have come into the Crashdown. Maria asks if she wants to talk about it but Liz tells her she can't, at least, now right now. She gets up and gathers the paperwork and exits upstairs.
Michael asks Maria what's going on and Maria says, "I don't know. You tell me." She's looking straight at Tess. Tess appears uncomfortable. "You gonna order or what?" Isabel looks around at everyone. "Is there something going on that I don't know about?" she asks. "Okay, whenever you're ready," returns Maria and turns to walk away. Michael grabs Maria's arm and says they need to talk. "In your dreams," says Maria. "Seriously," says Michael and looks to see if anyone is near. "Courtney's a Skin," he tells her. Maria turns and looks at him square. "And you're getting under mine." Michael tells her about all the bottles of body lotion he found and about the piece of skin. "I had to find out," he says. "And that makes it okay?" "No, but I had to do it." "Fine, " returns Maria and begins to walk away. Michael stops her. "Please, I need to talk to you about this." Maria turns. "Did you say please." She looks at him, keeping her feelings to herself. "Yeah." "Okay, later. I've got to go back to work."
Max comes in. He sits down, but says nothing. Tess tries to draw him into conversation, but he's doesn't say much except for polite, short answers. Isabel looks concerned. Michael starts talking about Courtney and what they need to do. Max is not listening. "Maxwell, what's wrong with you?" says Michael, irritated. "We need to do something about this. We need to find out who she is and if there are others! The whole town could be filled with Skins." "I just can't think right now!" says Max and gets up from the table and leaves. Michael asks Isabel about Max and Isabel says she doesn't know what's wrong. He's been like that for a week and nobody can get anything out of him. "Well, somebody has to," says Michael. Tess says, "I think it might be my fault." "How can it be your fault," says Isabel, and Tess proceeds to tell them how Liz came to see her and why. Isabel nods and says, "That's it. I should have guessed. We have to snap him out of it." "I have an idea," says Tess. Michael and Isabel stare at her in surprise.
Liz is upstairs in her room on the bed. There’s a box on it filled with stuff that belonged to Grandma Claudia. Her parents have been away a lot while the estate is being settled, clearing out her grandma's home, going to the lawyers, dispensing with portions of the will. They have been bringing some personal items back on each trip. This box they have given to Liz to sort.
She takes out a photo album. There are pictures of her grandmother at about her age now. She flips slowly through the B &W photo pages and thinks just how much she wanted to talk to her now, how she really needed to talk to her. She calls Maria and asks her to come over.
Meanwhile, ’cross town, Tess is talking to Kyle about the plan. She fills in Kyle about her meeting with Liz, "the destiny thing", about how Liz had been trying to get her and Max together, etc. It begins to make sense to Kyle and he now understands why Liz didn't tell him everything and why Liz seemed so upset that night. Liz really does love Max Evans he thought. He tells Tess what happened that night and she nods in complete understanding. She had already suspected. Kyle begins spouting Buddha, but Tess cuts him off. "This is really important," she says. "We have to make sure that Max hears you. We have to make sure he goes to Liz. He's coming." "How do you know that?" asks Kyle. "I just know."
Max sees Tess and Kyle talking on the park bench. First Liz, now Tess. He's about to go back the way he came, but he hears Liz's name. He stops. "I don't know why Liz wanted to do it." says Kyle. "I mean, not 'do it', you know, 'do it.' What am I talking about? I sound like an idiot." "It's okay, Kyle," Tess says, "I think I know what you mean. Liz told me she was doing it for Max. I know how much she loves Max. Anybody can see that. ... I believe her." "I know.," says Kyle. "And we weren't really doing anything, really. She just wanted Max to see me. Is that weird?" "I think she just was doing what she thought needed to be done, " Tess says. "What about you?" asks Kyle. "I don't know. Max doesn't love me. I know that. We're not the same as before. I don't even know if I love Max. I just assumed that was the way it was going to be. But now ..."
Max had heard enough. He knew. He should have always known. "Have faith in us!" Isn't that what he told Liz about Tess? And isn't that what Liz did ... went on faith? Why didn't he have any faith? He had to talk to Liz.
Liz had just finished telling the whole story to Maria – Future Max, the deaths of Isabel and Michael, the end of the world. "He's never going to speak to me again." "I can't believe you did that," exclaims Maria. "I didn't have a choice, Maria. ... I just keep seeing the look on his face." "You have to tell him." "I can't!" says Liz. "Weren't you listening? It's the only way to keep Tess in Roswell. I'm not even sure I should be telling you. And I, I don't think he'll ever believe or trust me again. No, Maria, it's done." "There's got to be some way." "I thought about it, Maria, and there isn't. ... It's late. You should go home." "You want me to stay?" ask Maria. "No, it's okay. I just have to find a way to deal with it." “You're sure?" "Yeah, go home before you get in trouble." "Call me if you need me." "I will." They hug and say good night. Liz locks up for the night.
Max is outside the Crashdown. He watches Maria leave, then heads for the fire ladder around the side to Liz's rooftop. Liz is in her bedroom again looking at the photos of her and Max. She touches his face, then puts them down again and turns to the box containing Grandma Claudia's things. She sticks her hand inside the box to see what's there. Max is watching. Liz turns to the window but doesn't see anything. Max has slipped to the side so Liz doesn't see him. Liz starts pulling things from the box. Her attention is particularly drawn to a couple of items. One looks like some kind of archaeological find, something from her work. And there's this long clear crystal. Odd, she thought. Why would her grandma have a crystal like this? She didn't remember seeing anything like it at Grandma Claudia's home. Liz picks it up and has an intense flash. She's no longer in her bedroom. She's in a large room and the Granilith is there, but it's not the pod chamber. It's somewhere else. There are other people in the room, behind her. She can hear them, but not see them. The crystal is in her hands. She's putting the crystal into the Granilith and ...
Liz is back in her room. Max is holding her. Where did he come from? He wasn't there a moment ago. She's a little disoriented and slightly embarrassed. She starts to push him away, but he holds her tighter. She starts to look away and sees part of the box and its contents scattered on the floor. The crystal's there too. "Are you okay?" he asks. She nods, but she's not sure. The flash was so real ... as if she had really been there, wherever "it "was. ... And Max was there.
"Liz?" He seems so concerned. How can he be after ... "Liz, I know what you did." How can ... "Liz, look at me." She looks at him and his face is filled with love. How can it be ... after what she did. It was the worst thing she had ever done in her life. "I know, Liz. I know. I heard Kyle talking with Tess, in the park." Kyle and Tess? What was he talking about. "I know you and Kyle set me up. I know why. You did it for Tess." "No, no ... you don't understand," she says, finding her voice and feeling a little steadier." "You don't know." Max looked perplexed. He hadn't expected Liz to say that. Was he wrong? "I did it for you," she admitted. "For me? Tess and I don't belong together." "Max, please ... please just listen. I did it for you ... for Isabel, for Michael. You were all going to die." She rushed through the story, relieved to let it go and a little scared to what it might mean for the future. It was as if every little step that she and Max took affected the whole world. She was almost afraid to breath anymore. "How could you keep this to yourself? It had to be so hard for you." "Max, we need to keep Tess in Roswell." "I know. We'll find a way to work it out." "But how?" "I don't know, but right now I need you, Liz." He brushed a few strands of errant hair from Liz's face and kissed her. "I've missed you," he says and as he moved forward, they trip over the box and fall onto Liz's bed. They kiss. "I love you, Liz Parker." "I love you, Max Evans." And she knew she was loved and she felt safe in his arms. It was going to be all right. Whatever else happened, they were going to be all right.
Outside, Kyle and Tess are congratulating themselves. "I don't think I've ever done anything that selfless before," says Buddha Boy. "That felt good." "Neither have I," says Tess. "You want to go somewhere?" asks Kyle. "I'd like that," says Tess. Kyle puts his arm around Tess and they walk off.
