![]() Sorry this has taken me so long to get this story posted. It's coming in two parts. As some of you may know, I've been having ISP problems during this transition time, so this may sound a little dated. I've been trying to keep these semi-close to the storyline so they seem somewhat plausible. So I've made a few adjustments, but I did leave some of the Granilith operations stuff alone for now. So please accept my apologies if it doesn't quite jive with what we know to date to date. Hope you enjoy it anyway.
Known facts about Liz:
When Max heals her, she has flashes as well as Max. Liz more or less confirms it in The Pilot when she asks Kyle if "he feels things..." conversation, and then again, in End of the World when she
asks Kyle if he had "flashes". She has them again in Pilot when Max does the reverse connection, in Sexual Healing, in Blind Date, Skin and Bones, and in End of the World. On two occasions, Kyle accuses her of being essentially "telepathic". So that fact that Liz is different from the rest of her human friends and family is continually being reinforced. So the question remains, who is Liz, really?
A continuing saga (but not the real one) - Part I
Liz's stunned parents study their daughter's face. There are worry lines on her mother's face. Nancy hadn't expected this so soon. She thought they had been so careful. ... They had protected her .... loved her. ... Now she wasn't sure what to do. Nancy looked at her husband for guidance, but there was none. Liz looked from one to the other, wanting some kind of reassurance, but none came. They held their breath in silence. The crystal shone brilliantly between them. Liz nods her head.
The next morning. Liz is getting ready for school. She's running late, but she stops to pause at her reflection in the mirror. It's as if she is looking at someone else. She hears Maria voice and shouts, "Coming."
Max, Isabel, Michael, and Tess are walking into school. Max is telling them about the crystal and what Liz told him about there being others. ... "How can she possibly know that?" says Tess. "I don't know," says Max, "but she does." At that moment, Liz and Maria come in and join them. They ask Liz questions about the crystals and Liz begins to tell them about this woman, this very beautiful woman. ... Isabel is feeling very uneasy. "We'll be late for class, " she says. Liz stares at Isabel a moment as they all begin heading to class. Max tells Liz that he'll meet her at the Crashdown after school. Then he hits her. She stops and says, "OMG." Isabel turns around the corner.
Liz has just gotten home from school. She’s putting a few things in her locker when her Dad comes in. "Lizzie?" She turns to look at him. "Your mother and I have been talking and we decided to give you this now." In his hands was a neatly wrapped package. "What is it?" "We were going to wait 'til you were older, but ...". Liz takes the package from him as Max comes in. "Am I interrupting something?" Max asks. There's some awkwardness as her dad explains about the package. "I'm just going to put this in my room," say Liz. Max follows her.
In her room, Liz studies the package for a moment then puts it on the desk. "We can do this later ..." Max says, but Liz stops him. "No, no ... it's okay. I’ll look at it later. The crystal's in the box.," she says pointing to it. He pulls it out and begins to look at it. "Max," Liz says, hesitating, trying to find the right words, "there’s something else." He stares at her. "I didn't want to say this in front of everyone, but Isabel ..." Before she can complete what she wanted to say, Max cuts her off and says, "I know." "About Isabel?" "Yes." "How?" "Nicholas told me... at the school." "Is it true?" "I don't know. I think it might be. Isabel's been avoiding me, like she's hiding something. I think Whitaker might have said something to her. She hasn't been herself." Liz nodded. "But how did you know?" "The crystal," she replied, running her hand through her hair.
At the Granilith, the rest of the gang is already present. They circle it, looking for something to give them a clue how it works. Tess is running her hands on the surface while Alex taps the surface listening for hollow sounds. Kyle is on his hands and knees examining the bottom. Isabel, alone, is standing back from them all. Maria is cracking jokes. Michael is examining the narrow shaft when Max and Liz arrive with the crystal. "There are no obvious openings or control panels," says Alex. "Maybe it attaches to the shaft," says Michael. "No, it doesn't," says Liz, matter of factly. They all look surprised. Max holds out the crystal to Liz. The light from the room makes it seem even more bright, she thought. She goes to take the crystal from Max and looks at Isabel. Isabel seems frightened. Of her? Why? She takes the crystal and has a flash ... or is it? They're all there, even Maria and Alex and Kyle. But it felt very different. Her senses felt very charged, as if they were carrying current ... like an electromagnetic field or something. But they weren't in Roswell anymore.
Did they know it? Could they feel it? As she approached the Granilith, an opening appeared, just large enough to fit the crystal. She took it and confidently placed it in the hole. The Granilith whirred into life. Was it a second or a minute? Liz couldn't tell because she could not rely on her senses. There was a brilliant flash and it was gone. The Granilith seemed to have stopped its motion. Tess, Max, Isabel and Michael were there; so were Maria, Alex and Kyle. But where were they? It was definitely NOT the pod chamber.
"OH ... MY ... GOD!" exclaimed Maria. Max took the crystal from the Granilith. "Are you okay?" he asked Liz, holding her face in his hands. "I'm fine," she said, but she wasn't. She was glowing ... like hot, white light. They were staring at her, somewhere between horror and disbelief. Fear ran in Isabel and Tess' eyes. "Where are we?" she asked Max. "I don't know."
Liz is staring at her hands. There's a white aura emanating from them and her arms and her legs. Could this be possible? What was happening to her? Max started to touch her but she withdraws. "Don't touch me," she warns . He's taken aback. "I'm not grounded," she says. They don't seem to understand. Liz touches some metal, but there's no spark, no electrical discharge. "I think I'm carrying an electrical charge or something. I need to discharge it. ... There's a panel, a console somewhere." Liz is looking at Isabel. "Here," she says. "You have to open it "I can't! I don't know how." "Yes, Isabel," says Liz nodding, "you do, you do." And Isabel does open the panel. There's a set of handprints, small, like a woman's. Liz walks over and places her hands over the top. They're a perfect match. Slowly, the charge seeps from her body into the panel. The handprints on the console begin to change color. The light in the room becomes more subdued. The aura is gone.
"It's okay," Liz says. Max takes Liz's hands and looks at her palms and asks "Who are you?" She shakes her head and says, "I don't know anymore."
"Ah, ... guys, I hate to tell you this, but we're not in Roswell anymore." Alex is standing by a window. They all go to the window. There are stars all around them and the remains of a red giant." "We're on a spaceship," says Max. "But where are all the people?" asks Tess. "Maybe they're somewhere else, in another room," says Max, trying to reassure her. "I don't think so," says Liz. "This is like a scene from Star Trek: The Wacked Generation," says Maria. "Max, you know, this is the red giant that exploded ...," says Liz, "you know, the one we were discussing in class." "I know," he agrees. "It's also the one I saw before ... the one I saw in the flash ... before the crash." Max turned around and looked again. She was right. He remembered her showing him the photograph hanging in the classroom. What was it? ... The Whirlwind Galaxy. It had to be important. "Maybe we should look around."
"If we split up, we can cover more ground," says Michael. "No one goes alone," says Max. "We don't know what we're dealing with and there may be others ... They pair off: Michael & Maria, Isabel & Alex, Tess & Kyle, Max & Liz.
There are four exits. The room is set up like a compass rose – with the four exits representing north, south, east & west. The exits open when they stand directly in front of them ... as if they were set to open when someone/something got within a certain range. Sensors? Max looked up to see if there were cameras or some sort of monitoring system. He saw none. "Be careful, be smart. Let's meet back here in an hour."
Maria and Michael are in what appears to be the operations center. There is no one here and no trace of any living being. It's as if the room had been wiped clean. There's a panel of switches. Michael begins flipping them. "Don't do that," says Maria. "Why not?" "You might accidentally blow us up or something." Michael shrugs. "They don't seem to be working," he says. "What's this," asks Maria. It looks like some kind of navigational map. "It's a map," says Michael, "Maybe to our home planet." "How can you be so sure," says Maria. "Look," he replies, and begins to show her how to read it. "We should take it. It could be important." He picks it up and rolls it up. "We'd better start heading back.
Alex and Isabel are in the engine room. "Look at all this stuff!" says Alex. "It's right out of Star Wars! I wonder if any of this works." "Don't touch anything, Alex!" warns Isabel. "I'm not. I just want a closer look." Isabel spots a device on a counter. She picks it up. "I wonder what this is?" she says. Alex takes it from her. "I don't know. I can probably figure it out though."
Kyle and Tess are in the kitchen area. Again, there's hardly any trace of anyone having been there. All the utensils are neatly put away. There's no food to been seen anywhere. How could a kitchen be this clean? It was kind of spooky, thought Kyle. It was as if they abandoned ship, but for no reason. Wasn't there a story about a ship that was found in the Atlantic? No trace of living beings? "Someone's watching us," says Tess. "How do you know?" "I feel it." "You mean, physically here." "I'm not sure." "Maybe we'd better leave." "I think that's a good idea."
Max and Liz are going through the living quarters. The rooms are sparse and utilitarian. There are a few traces of habitation, clothes, objects, but no people. They are in one of the last rooms and Liz spots a book on a table. It's in English. She taps Max and the shoulder with one hand and picks up it. It's a well-worn copy of "The Once and Future King." She opens it up and reads, "To Claudia ...." "OMG," she says. "What is it?" says Max. "It's my grandma's." And at that moment, a young woman appears, bathed in a subdued light. "You must be 'The Once and Future King'," addressing Max , "and you would be ..." Before she can finish, Liz says, "Liz Parker." The woman nods. "My name is Serena."
