You can learn the intelligence of these amazing creatures by watching how they interact.</div> <div>  They will create their own form of hierarchy and I have even had Cichlids that would clear gravel out of a small space on the bottom of the aquarium and demonstrate that they understood that there was a three dimensional world beyond their own aquarium. There was one that would watch you through the front glass and then move to where he had cleared a hole in the gravel to watch me when I would feed the fish in the aquarium below his.
