Background
----------------
In the summer of June 1916 the Russians initiated their last effective offensive against the Central Powers.  This offensive is popularly known as Brusilov's Offensive after the very capable General Alexei Brusilov, commander of the four southern armies, the 8th, 11th, 7th and the 9th.

Initially Brusilov was directed to prepare an offensive which would be launched inconjunction with offnsive operations in the Courland region.  Unfortunately through, before preparations could be completed, the Austrians launched their offensive against the Italians in the Trentino sector.  The Italians pleaded with the allies to create a diversion and the Russians, as was their custom, complied.

The great attack started all along the Galician front in the beginning of June and was an immediate success eventhough Brusivol had no more than a parity of strength against the Austria-Hungarians.  By attacking simultaneously with all four armies  and using a minimum of artillery preparation, a complete surprise was achieved.  Conrad von Hoetzendorf had been confident thathis elaborate defense of five lines of deep trenches would be more than enough to halt any offensive, but he was mistaken.  Masses of Czech troops in the Austrian army went over to the enemy without firing a shot, and the lines were broken on almost a 200-mile front.  On the first day alone, 13,000 prisoners were taken, and in three weeks the Austrian army had lost over 200,000 mostly by desertion.

As with all offensives, this attack would eventually come to a halt due to exhaustion of the troops, but not until approximately a million casualties were suffered from both of the opposing sides.  The Central Powers would need to bring in German, Turk and Bulgarian reserves in order to stabilize the front lines.   In the end, both the Austria-Hungary and Russian empires would be near collaspe.
