Background
----------------

The French and British tried their final big offensive for 1915 in late September.  This time Joffre planned for a massive cannonade of the German trench system in the Champagne region (from Reims east to the Argonne) followed by a massive infantry attack.  This assault was intended to drive a wedge northward and sweep away the German defenders.

A second French attack was planned for the Artois region which would drive towards the east.  This attack was to be supported by a British effort around the mining town of Loos.

If all went according to plan, these two offensives would meet somewhere in Belgium, trapping half of the entire German army on the Western Front.  But not all went according to plan.  In Champagne the pre-assault artillery barrage would be the heaviest seen so far in the war but the French would still suffer staggering losses charging into the face of the machine guns.  The British, severely lacking in both heavy artillery and the high explosive shells needed to destroy German wire, would also waste their strength against the machine guns.

The German army though, was not quite as secure behind their defenses as it would appear.  Quite a few front line divisions had been siphoned off the front and redeployed against the Russians in Courland, Poland and Galicia.  A few more would be sent to Serbia.  Their defense in the west demonstrates the ability of a stout defense manned be relatively few troops to inflict terrible punishment on an attacking force.  This lesson would be repeated.

This scenario picks up the action on about September 23.  All three Allied offenses are assumed to be in progress.
