VERSION 1.2
Background
----------------
By the 22nd of August 1914 the Northern Wing of the German Army had reduced the Liege forts to rubble, occupied Brussels, chased the valiant Belgian army all the way to Antwerp and had placed the French 5th Army in the position where immediate retreat was the only means of avoiding total destruction. Into the path of the Schlieffen Plan stepped the little English army unaware, as were also the French, of the true size of the German army sweeping down on them near the Belgian town of Mons. Earlier, when informed that the British army would support the French, the Kaiser had referred to the British as that "Contemptible" little army. . . and so the British took to calling themselves the "Old Contemptible".
Between the British defeat at Mons on August 23rd and the beginning on the Battle of the Marne on September 5th, the German armies will capture the last Belgian fortress at Namur, the French fortresses and fortified cities at Longwy, Montmedy, Laon and Reims, and the French armies under General Charles Lanrezac will be driven from the left flank following the French defeats suffered at Charleroi. The Allied cause will be in danger of complete collapse.
This scenario simulates the events leading up to the high water mark of the German assault on the Western front, the Battle of Mons and the events leading up to the Battle of the Marne.
Victory Conditions
------------------------
The Germans must defeat the British as Mons and drive South to capture the last two French fortifications protecting Paris, the forts at La Fere and Laon. The Germans will also find it necessary to protect the territory around Metz from the threat of a French counter attack materializing out of the remnants of Plan XVII.
Remarks
------------
The Mons scenario is designed to be played from the German side as a
solitaire game. As usual, Cheyenne PBM provides the best competition,
however, it is strongly recommend that in the Cheyenne game the German
forces be given a +2 boost in prestige to balance out the advantageous
defensive prosition provided to the French/British.
