VERSION 1.0
As soon as Ottoman intervention had become clear, Indo-British troops had been landed in the Shat el Arab and, after overcoming weak Turkish resistance, reached Basra on 22 November 1914. By the end of the year the British had advanced to the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Despite harsh climatic conditions, they gradually moved up both rivers and reached Selman Pak 30 miles south of Baghdad by early October 1915.
The first Ottoman commander in Iraq, Colonel Subhi Bey, was taken prisoner
in December 1914; his successor, Lieutenant Colonel Süleyman Askerî,
failed in his mission and committed suicide in April 1915. Appointed
in his stead, Colonel Yusef Nur-ed-Din eventually slowed the British advance
on Baghdad. By the time the elderly German field marshal Baron von
der Goltz reached Baghdad to take charge of the situation in both Iraq
and Persia, Nur-ed-Dins troops had already repulsed a major British attack
by General Charles Townshend's 6th (Poona) Division at Ctesiphon and subsequently
encircled them at Kut al Amara. Four months later, after several
British attempts to relieve him had failed, Townshend and the remains of
his army would surrender to the Ottoman 6th Army and Brigadier Halil Pasha..
Victory Conditions
------------------------
The Allies must land and quickly move inland to capture the river crossings
on the Piave River and the mountain passes in the Julian Alps. One
of the primary objectives is the town of Cadore near the headwaters of
the Piave. The objectives trace the corridors which the follow on
forces will use for the offensives into Austria, Germany and the Balkan
States. Capture all objectives.
Remarks
------------
This scenario is designed to be played in the solitaire mode with the AI playing the Axis side. When played as a PBM game, it is recommended that Allied prestige be set to +2.
The Allied forces do not start off with an over powering force, however, there is ample prestige provided which allows the Allies to reinforce depleted units and to acquire a selection of additional units. Units available for purchase become available starting on the forth turn.
