Background
----------------
The Dual Monarchy of Austria-Hungary initiated the hostilities of World War I on 29 July 1914 with an artillery bombardment on the Serbian capital of Belgrade. Artillery bombardment was all Austria-Hungary could do since their ability to mobilize and deploy the armies was completely inept.
The first invasion of Serbia began on 12 August 1914 and proved to be a disaster for Austria-Hungary. The Serbian army was trained, motivated and very experienced from the Balkan Wars of 1912 and 1913. In addition, Serbia is a land of excellent defensive terrain and the army was led by the very capable Field Marshal Radomir Putnik. Austria-Hungary was commanded by General Oscar Potiorek, a man destined to become a footnote of military history.
Putnik let Potiorek advance to the limit of the Austria-Hungarian supply train before striking. When he did strike it was decisive and the 1st Austria-Hungary invasion was quickly over.
The 2nd invasion of Serbia was launched on 8 September 1914 and was nearly a replay of the 1st invasion. This time however, after the retreat was over, the Austria-Hungarian army was able to hold on to small toeholds of Serbian territory.
This scenario picks up the action on 14 November 1914 as the 3rd invasion
gets under way. Historically, Austria-Hungary is again held to no
gain as the casualty list reaches 225,000 Austria-Hungarians and 200,000
Serbia's. At this early point in the war Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey
and Greece have not yet decided which side offers the greatest war booty
and Germany is too busy with France, England and Russia to lend assistance.
Austria-Hungary is on it's own against the mighty Serbian war machine.
Montenegro, Albania and Macedonia are allied with Serbia. Although
this is not historically accurate, it is not far from the prevailing sympathies
of the period.
