 Internet Service Providers
A year ago, on a previous incarnation of this page, I gave an accounting of the free Internet Providers available. I once belonged to at least ten of them {three different computers, naturally}. Then the bottom fell out.
The first to go was little Bob, you know that little guy that used to sit in the chair and speak like an adult? Sort of like in "Who's Talking"? He represented freeInternet.com. What, at first appeared to be an isolated incident, another unfortunate dot-comb bomb, soon became a portent of things to come! Next, came the e-mail from Snap.com detailing how the internet company powering them would close down in a few weeks. That company also powered three of my other ISP's.
Most (if not all) of these companies were involved in other internet activities before offering free ISP services so, for the most part they all survived doing what they always did. AltaVista was and continues to be a great search- engine. Snap.com became nbci.com (yes, that NBC) which, besides being a home page, is also a premium ( as opposed to free ) ISP. Sweepsclub and iwin continue to provide entertainment, lotteries, and games (oh, my!)! MyPoints.com still rewards you with points for surfing with their affiliates. No one is too sure what happened to lil' Bob, but we hope he is finally potty-trained.
Strange But True: Baby Bob is played by three girls on the show !!!!
Now the field is basically down to one - NetZero, and they have cut their free hours down to twelve per month.
Services, and prices vary greatly between the Internet Providers. Shop carefully. Consider Broadband as long as you'll have to pay nowadays. Not all broadband connections are created equal either.

Note: The list.com is a good source for ISP's but I have found it to be not as up-to-date as I expected. As the face of the net changes daily, information I post today can also be obsolete by tomorrow, so I will do my best to keep it as accurate as possible.
YAHOO
Yahoo is not an ISP. Yahoo is a portal. There are magazines available that can sing Yahoo's virtues much better than I. They have the advertising bucks to back them, and the pages available. You can even buy books that help you unlock the secrets, or unleash the power of Yahoo. I, have only paragraphs !
I searched for online drives, signed up for three, before I realized that I already had one waiting for me at Yahoo. I became interested in building web pages, researched a few sites, built a couple of pages, and guess what ? You got it ! I never had to leave Yahoo to do it. E- Mail, Instant Messenger, Shopping, Chat, Web Pages, Search Engine. They even have a points program that rewards you for surfing and/or reading e-mail. I'm reminded of the end of "The Wizard Of Oz", when Dorothy recounts the lesson she had learned, that many of the things she'd been searching for were right in her own backyard all along. (This one's for you Barry).
 Instant Messengers
Instant Messaging is a way to communicate in real time. Many of the following have voice capability, so you can speak directly to one another, as opposed to sending an E-mail and having to wait for a reply. Depending upon your needs, any one of the following may be enough, however it has been my experience that the first three are a "must have".
YAHOO
My relationship with Yahoo goes back almost as far as my online experience. Back in the days of free ISP's, after NetZero failed to recognize what I thought was the ID & Password I set up on my old 486 computer, I set up an account with Bluelight.com, and they were "fortified" with Yahoo .
I soon began wondering what all the fuss about America Online was about. The biggest differences I could see as a novice were:
1.) The mail at Yahoo came with graphics, not plain, boring text.
2.) The PRICE!!! Yahoo was free. AOL at the time cost about $20 a month.
With Yahoo Instant Messenger, you can conference several contacts at the same time, send files, and be alerted if your inbox receives any new mail (which may or may not be a good thing - depending on how much mail you get!).
MSN
There is one cool feature of the MSN Messenger that I really like! That is, it allows you to make a phone call directly from your browser while you are online! I f you have a credit card handy, you can buy additional time from Net2Phone, which provides the service, and offers rates probably lower than your current long distance carrier !!!
You can start or refill your Net2Phone account by clicking the banner above !
You can access your MSN Messenger either through your Internet Explorer Toolbar, or by clicking "Tools" in your toolbar, (depending on which version of Internet Explorer you have) and selecting "Messenger", or by clicking here: http://messenger.msn.com/.
If you don't already have one you will be prompted to create your "Passport", another fancy name for ID. Once you have one, you'll have access to all of MSN's features, including Messenger, Hotmail, and Communities.
AIM
Click here to download AIM: http://aimtoday.aim.com/ perhaps the most widely used of the Instant Messengers. It is the Instant Messenger of choice for Netscape, Juno, Compuserve, and of course, America Online. You can now talk with any of your online buddies that use these ISP's!
The feature I like the most is that you can send pictures directly through the Messenger, (instead of, as a file attachment, {as on the other Messengers}), and they will display as soon as they are uploaded on the other end. To do this, a direct connection to the other computer is necessary. So be sure you know and can trust anyone you decide to Direct Connect to, to keep the possibility of sharing viruses to a minimum!
MECA
The new kid on the block, MECA promises to be compatible with the three Messengers previously talked about along with ICQ by the middle of the year. It is a product of Cosmiverse, which as you can see, I've been pushing here at .

BRAVENET
This Messenger is already compatible with multiple Messengers. The only feature I don't like which I'm sure Brad and Dave are working on for the next upgrade is that this Messenger cannot be minimized. It's always upfront and in the way, which is not a bad thing if that's all you're doing. It's a pain for multi-taskers.
You can get yours by clicking on the banner, setting up a free account, and checking out the services Bravenet provides.
Where would you like to go ?
