Y2K Virus Attack Subject: [HFI] Y2K virus attack Y2K virus attack By Nicole Koffey NEW YORK. 3:05 PM EST-A new virus, named W32.Mypics. Worm--Mypics, for short--is on the loose. The worm is one of many expected Y2K bugs engineered to erase your hard drive and install pornography on your home page. The virus spreads on Windows and Windows NT platforms after arriving as an e-mail with no subject line. Once opened, the text of the e-mail reads: "Here's some pictures for you," and an attachment labeled Pics4You.exe appears. Mypics then forwards itself to the first 50 people in your Microsoft Outlook address book and changes the home page on your computer to a site with pornographic pictures. The virus continues to send itself in intervals of 20 minutes and then ten. Then, assuming it is still 1999, the virus waits. The file Pics4You.exe stays on your computer and monitors the systems clock. As the clock strikes 2000, the file creates another file called CBIOS.com and inserts it into the user's C drive. Once the user reboots the computer on Jan. 1, 2000, the virus creates a new AUTOEXEC.BAT and reformats the C and D drives entirely. The virus is one of the first in a wave expected to hit computer users as the year 2000 approaches. To the user, the real problem appears as the computer is rebooted on Jan. 1, 2000. Because the virus overwrites the checksum data in the host computer's CMOS memory, it appears to the user that there is a Y2K problem related to the computer's BIOS. As the computer is restarted, all other information on the hard drive is systematically erased. |

Bubbleboy Virus Hi,everyone Computer security experts are warning of a dangerous new e-mail virus, one able to destroy information even when users don't fully open their messages. "Bubbleboy," apparently nicknamed after an episode of the TV show "Seinfeld", is the first known e-mail virus that doesn't even need to be fully opened to be activated. Just highlighting the e-mail's subject line in Microsoft Outlook Express activates its hidden code. It also takes every address in a computer's e-mail program and passes the virus along. Researchers at Network Associates, a Santa Clara computer security company, said "Bubbleboy" could become the framework for the easy delivery of a host of malicious programs. "This ushers in the next evolution in viruses. It breaks one of the long-standing rules that you have to open an e-mail attachment to become infected," spokesman Sal Viveros said. "That's all changed now." "Bubbleboy" was e-mailed late Monday to Network Associates and the company put a free software patch capable of blocking the attack on its Web site the next day. |
