HASEGAWA BOXART

SUPER DETAIL VERSION BOXART

Reviewer: Peter Volkers  (rec.models.scale)

Kit:  Hasegawa 1/48 Hurricane Mk.IIc

This is a lovely kit in the box and is going to be a decent buy for anyone that is after a quality quarter scale Hurricane of this variant.  First impressions are really good and I share the following thoughts with you.

Sprues have been separated in a calculated fashion to allow a number of versions to be broken down from this kit, and we know of these now since this kit was released back in about '97.  For example the fuselage is in two sections - the cockpit and main sections - allowing a different nose to be portrayed for other Hurricane versions.

First I looked at the overall profile of the bird and its detail and I can say with confidence that this kit is excellent in these regards.  The panel lines are engraved and emit superb quality.  Perhaps its only real flaw is the way that it has replicated the fabric areas which will require some attention for improvement.  I've heard others suggest using sandpaper over the edges and ridges to help out so this is something I will keep in mind.

The cockpit qualifies as the usual new tooling Hasegawa offerings that includes the distinctive framework for the Hurricane's cockpit sidewalls.  The seat is a stock standard offering that is a bit thick and could well be better replaced from a number of aftermarket sources most notably probably Jaguar.  The instrument panel has been done quite well with finely raised console detail that will look good once it has been detailed.  Other parts of the cockpit include the floor, which allows one to see through to the bottom of the aircraft underneath, sidewall detail, stick and rudder pedals all of which have been replicated nicely.

The main break up of the parts is two fuselage sections, as spoken of above, plus the lower nose section is also added on separately, allowing a tropical version with the Volks filter to be attached for other variants.  The wings are split horizontally and also include plugs for the leading edges which indicates different armament equipped versions will also be covered in other releases.  In this kit the 20-mm cannon with multiple barrel lengths are supplied - but only for the IIc version.

So that's the impressions I have gotten out of this kit in the box, certainly a decent buy for anyone who is interested in this subject and in spite of the discussion about fabric replication is still probably the best offering on the market.  Highly recommended!!
