This is the second archive page for all the additions and changes made to SMAKR over the past few years since its inception at the end of September 1998. Updates to the What's New page did not start until November 1998, so the previous months were reconstructed from memory. This page is the earliest additions and changes, and created to alleviate the information and loading times on the other What's New archives page, which has only the most recent couple of years of updates listed. At the end of each calendar year, it is likely the oldest year on the first archives page will be added hereto.

* Fortunecity server problems prevented a lot of updates from occurring and from also being able to access the site. It was taking on average about 15 minutes PER REVIEW to upload (if FTP was working it takes an average of 15 SECONDS per review to upload). As a result, the site is not updated anywhere near intended.

* Interesting summer down here with major bushfires burning out three or four suburbs of Canberra, with 500 houses destroyed in a couple of hours and every state in Australia (apart from the hottest... here!) being devastated by massive bushfires. Temperatures in the sun hitting 49C, and endless days of 40C temperatures, in fact one day broke 44C in the shade, the hottest for 20 years. We are also hit by the worst drought you can imagine, one four year old boy up north has never seen a drop of rain in his life.

* October marked one of the busiest months as far as updates were concerned since the inception of SMAKR (but probably now outdone by November updates above - Ed!). Updates were almost daily and some 23 new review additions appeared on the site. The site also received a big update with a number of changes to pages being made, both cosmetically and grammatically. A new page of model images also appeared setting the trend of the future of SMAKR as a resource.

* The reference section was updated and included a discussion article about the evolution of 'scales' in scale modelling. It touches on all the scales and their heritage, also providing some advice and personal opinions on how each of the scales measures up... so to speak.
* The site also received a bit of a cosmetic alteration and an update on many of the popular pages including new information and a complete upgrade of the Home, site info and Submissions page amongst others. And the mundane task of the updating of all the reviews possible to include the date (at least month/year) the review was submitted to SMAKR was concluded. Reviews which were not updated can almost certainly be assumed to have been submitted between September 1998 and January 1999 - with many of those kits possibly built prior to when the site came online.
* The Links page received a bit of an overhaul with all the links rechecked for accuracy and updated/killed. Unfortunately I also had to delete all the Online Hobby store links for a couple of practical reasons. In spite of disclaimers it seemed that these stores were still viewed as being 'endorsed' by SMAKR, which was never the case, they were displayed simply for information and reference purposes. Furthermore, there was some thought that these were also 'advertisements' when in fact they were not, they were freely placed on the links page. To avoid any further confusion or wrong perceptions, the easiest thing to do was simply delete the links!

SMAKR BACK ONLINE after a rigorous few weeks of completely restructuring the site. This included updating every review with a new menu link (replacing the old link that took you only to Index or Home Pages) and a new background image for every review as well, ensuring a pleasing aspect to the reading component of the site, and to allow SMAKR to have an identifiable theme. This also ensured that the reviews are displayed as they were intended, as sometimes people's individual computer settings might turn white backgrounds into black and black writing into grey making it difficult to see things at their end. Naturally the News page was updated with all this and everything was documented
* Unfortunately the transition to the new structure was not exactly smooth sailing as it was learned quickly that the menu link in the majority of reviews was corrupted and pointing to a file on my hard disk rather than onto the internet. As a result the painstaking task of rectifying each and every menu link on every page of SMAKR commenced and was completed in July.

* Finally got out of the renting cycle, having big clean up and garage sale at previous residence where I had lived for five and a half years, and now moved (11th Aug) into my first "owned" home! This was the main focus for me for the month as well as settling in etc, so not many SMAKR updates were forthcoming

* Big month personally - Bought my first house and thus prepared to get out of the rent cycle! GST (Goods & Services Tax) hits Australia - kit prices actually go down (10% GST less than previous 22% Sales Tax!) although not all model stores honour that system strictly to the letter!
* Terrible flu-like illness keeps me in bed and out of action for most of the month, what is worse (maybe not for others though!) was that I had no voice for a period of nearly three months! Thank God SMAKR updates require nothing verbally!
