BIOGRAPHY
FIREIGN are an independent Canadian metal band hailing from the province of Newfoundland. The 4-piece band, consisting of members Trevor Leonard (Lead Guitar), Harry Clarke (Bass/Vocals), Brian King (Rhythm Guitar), and Dale Parsons (Drums), were formed in 2001 and originally called Detonation. Since then, FIREIGN have grown to become a leading force in the metal scene of Newfoundland. After receiving such strong local support in both show turnouts and CD/Merchandise sales alike, they decided to take their music to the next level, and bring it into the international metal community.
FIREIGN have had 3 official releases. First came the `Detonation Demo'(2001), a 4-song EP which was put together on an unreasonably low budget and failed to make a dent in the local community. However, after getting together 8 original songs together, FIREIGN decided to use their winnings from a local battle of the bands to fund an LP… called "Valley of Unrest"(2002). The LP earned the #2 spot in BW&BK's "best demos of 2003' list and landed them on the cover of Current magazine… as well as receiving nothing but rave reviews from all over the globe. With this LP, FIREIGN were able to obtain a recording grant from the Canadian government, and with the sales of the album and profits from merchandise, were able to professionally produce, press, and internationally distribute an enhanced 4-song promotional CD (dubbed the `2004 Promo') completely free of charge. The limited 1000 copy release was grabbed up by metalheads all over the world before it was even finished.
Many terms have been used to describe FIREIGN's unique sound. Some consider it to be melodic death metal, others consider it thrash. The influences of the band include a wide variety of different subgenres of metal, perhaps a factor in making the band somewhat difficult to define. The Iron Maiden influence is probably the most eminent in the earlier recordings, where as the more recent stuff has been more influenced by melodic death such as In Flames or Arch Enemy, as well as black metal such as Immortal or Absu. The members love and listen to every subgenre of metal, and the resulting sound is a cauldron full of every eminent metal band in the last decade. But like any band, the only way to get a real idea of what FIREIGN sound like is to put the CD in your stereo and crank it up.
