Pelletier comes from the Latin word "pellis" and means one which prepares, works or sells skins or furs. The Greeks and the romans regarded the furs as a sign characteristic of cruelty. But, as of the 6th century the Europeans delevoped a taste for the feel of the soft fur-lined coats. In France Charlemagne wore an otter doublet. In 1346 Paris, the fur merchants were thriving. Many of these merchants took the name Pelletier.
