Great software program for Beanie Babies collectors!

Beanie Condition: Beanie Jeanie, I have a Beanie without the swing heart tag. Is this Beanie still worth anything?

Yes, but it will be less than the MWBT (Mint with both tag) value. MWBT or Mint value refers to the value of a perfect or near perfect Beanie with both swing and tush tags in perfect condition.
Beanie Jeanie suggests the following condition factors to be used to calculate realistic Beanie prices:
1.00 - MWBT - Mint Beanie with both mint tags
0.80 - Creased heart tag - Mint Beanie with both tags
0.55 - No heart tag - Mint Beanie with only tush tag
0.40 - Well-loved Beanie with no heart tag
0.25 - Well-loved Beanie with markings on tush tag
0.10 - Extremely well-loved Beanie with no tag
1.00 - Mint Beanie with mislabeled tush tag
0.60 - Mint Beanie with mislabeled heart tag
In the Beanie Jeanie software program, the above factors are used to calculate a collector's realistic Beanie collection value. See also "Beanie Jeanie - Condition Factor."

Fakes: Beanie Jeanie are there counterfeits Beanies out there?

Yes, when there's money to be made… unfortunately, there will be greed. There are quite a few counterfeits on the market now. Some are so well-made that you cannot tell the difference unless you set a real one and a fake one next to each other and someone points out to you the differences. I've seen fake 1997 Teddy, Spooky, Kiwi, Grunt, Garcia, Chops, Righty, and a few more. I know there are now fake Erin and Princess. Check out the webpage at the Beaniemom website below for further details.
Ty Inc. has set up a toll free Hot Line (1-888-317-5489) for reporting people or stores that are selling counterfeit Beanie Babies.

Fakes/Authentication: Beanie Jeanie, how can I be sure that I am not buying a counterfeit beanie... especially those retired ones that are so expensive?

Make sure you check your sellers' references. Go through the steps by making those phone calls, sending those e-mails and searching the internet's the good/bad traders list. (See Beanie Info - Internet Buying)
Below is a website, not connected with Ty or Beanie Jeanie, that will authenticate your Beanie for $20 plus shipping and insurance. The service is provided by Peggy Gallagher and Paula Abrinko, who are quite knowledgeable and reputable in the Beanie Babies community today.

Iggy/Rainbow: Beanie Jeanie, what is going on with Iggy and Rainbow?

Rainbow and IggyWhen Rainbow the chameleon, and Iggy the Iguana, first came on the market in Jan 98, the colorful lizard with a spine on its back has the name Iggy, on both heart and body tags. The bluish lizard has the name Rainbow on both its tags.
Soon after, Ty officially announced that they do have Iggy and Rainbow mixed up and their tags will be switched. There are sightings of Rainbow and Iggy with newly corrected tags with the colorful one having the rainbow tag and the bluish one having the Iggy tag in April 98.
But of course the controversy doesn't stop there because many naturalists believe Iggy and Rainbow are anatomically incorrect. Please read the following e-mail I received:
"Rainbow and Iggy do not have switched tags. It is their skin that is switched.
You can tell that Rainbow is a chameleon because he has a crest behind his head. Iggy is an iguana - he has the spikes down his back.
I know this because I owned both real live lizards myself. Ask any herpetologist -they will tell you the same.
Ty's website is also wrong - but to correct would cause a stir. If they give them their proper skin, it would certainly create a frenzy, too."
What will happen to the prices of Iggy and Rainbow? At this point, these two are the most expensive of all the Jan 98 introductions (excluding Britannia). Like the Waves and Echo episode, I think it will be the same with Iggy and Rainbow. If Ty doesn't retire Iggy and Rainbow within a short period, I do think the original mixed up tagged Iggy and Rainbow would be worth a little bit more.
In late spring 98, the colorful Rainbow with Iggy tag is spotted with a red forked tongue and the swing tag attached on its spine. Although it is in the rainbow colors, it still has the Iggy tag.

Internet Buying: Beanie Jeanie, do you buy your Beanies in the internet? How can you trust those people?

Yes, I have made quite a few purchases via the Internet. I never had a problem. I think you should check the sellers out before sending money. Ask for their references when you begin dealing with them. Usually, if they have had a few transactions before, they will be on a good traders list. There are numerous lists out there. Use common sense! Check their references via e-mail or phone calls.
As for me, I always ask them for their phone number and speak to them directly before I send money. That way, I know the person and possibly, check on their other Beanie inventory too. I meet so many great people that way!

Mistagged Heart Tag: Beanie Jeanie, I got a Gobbles with a Twigs heart tag. Will it worth more?

Sorry, mistagged heart tag will not make your Beanie worth any more or less while they are a current. Heart tags can be taken off and put back on easily.
When your Gobbles is retired, I am afraid she will be worth less than the other correctly tagged Gobbles. People will think you have a Gobbles without a heart tag to begin with and that you just stuck on any old tag!

Mistagged Tush Tag: Beanie Jeanie, I have a Valentino that has Curly body (tush) tag? Is it rare? Will it worth more?

There are so many Beanies made that mistakes are bound to happen. Now mistagged Beanies are not rare anymore and probably decrease in value. Historically, on Beanies that is, there are two Beanies that have mistakes on the tush tag and worth more… they are Libearty with the BEANINE spelling and Tusk with the TUCK tag.
Visit Vicky Krupka's page below and see the abundance of mistagged Beanies and manufacturer's oddities.

Newsgroup: Beanie Jeanie, are there any Beanie Babies newsgroup on the Internet?

Yes, check out "alt.collecting.beanie-babies". There are many messages, rumors, Beanies for sale, trade, etc. But it is an unmonitored news group. That means any one can post to that newsgroup, including some inappropriate sex-related websites.
You'll need a newsgroup reader software program that has to be set up properly with your internet service provider's newsreader's name. Most e-mail programs will have capabilities to read and post to newsgroups.
For those with American Online, go to the keyword "Beanie Babies" and you will see various newsgroups and a chat area on Beanie Babies.

Oddities: Beanie Jeanie, I have Erin without the shamrock on her chest. Can you tell me what is it worth? How can I get the best price if I decided to sell her?

Your Erin is definitely a rare one. The price of your Erin will be whatever the market will bear. (...got that, bear!) I think if you auction her off, you might get the best price. You can set a lowest price that you are willing to accept to part with her. If no one meets that price, she'll still be yours. (See Beanie Info - Auctions for some possible auction sites.)
Check out Vicky Krupa's page below and see whether she has your Beanie listed in her Oddities list. E-mail her at OddOnes@aol.com and tell her about your Beanie.

Old/New Face Teddy: Beanie Jeanie, how do you tell an old face Teddy from a new face Teddy? I think I have an old face Teddy.

Old /New FaceTeddyTy first made their teddys with Victorian "Old Faces" where the eyes were on the side of the forehead seams with a small triangle nose, and without any ribbon around their necks. The "New Face" teddys replaced the old face ones in 1995. They have a bigger, rounder face, eyes inside the forehead seams and a large oval nose.
Sometimes, a collector thinks her new face teddy might be "old face" because the teddy's face looks different. That's usually because the string inside the teddy's head that pulls its nose down is missing or loose and makes the face puff up like an old face. (This doesn't decrease the teddy's value.) This string goes from its chin and passes right under the new face teddy's eyes and back out at the chin.

Princess PVC/PE: Beanie Jeanie, which is more valuable, PVC or PE Princess with a "P.V.C. PELLETS" or "P.E. PELLETS" body tag?

Princess    There are both PE and PVC tush tags that came out with the 1997 Princess. But most dealers think that PVC Princess is more rare than the PE Princess. In April 98, PVC Princess was selling for $150-200 whereas the PE Princess was selling for $80-$120 on the secondary market. I think this is getting really fickle! Only time will tell whether the difference in prices will last.
Most Beanie experts think their values should be similar… but of course, you buy and sell at whatever prices you can at that moment in time! Check out Vicky Krupka's article below about PVC vs PE Princess.

Rumors: Beanie Jeanie, which Beanie Babies are going to be retired next?

Beanie Jeanie is a trained engineer… I like to deal with facts. So I can't really help you with any predictions. No one but Ty Warner, the creator and owner of Ty, Inc. knows for sure which Beanie is going to retire next. He and his company can keep secrets very well.
If you are really interested in reading about rumors of what is going on in the Beanie community, the best place is at Gabi, of the RJW's Beanie Mania website, at the web address listed below.

Stores: Beanie Jeanie, can you tell me where I can buy Beanie Babies in Lock Haven, Pa?

Well, since I am in Florida, I can't help you directly. But if you click on the weblink below, it will take you to the web page where there are listings of places that sell Beanie Babies. That website is very comprehensive and thorough, showing places where you can buy Beanies by states. Also, they have now added Canada and Europe, which includes Great Britain, Germany and more. Good luck.

Ty: Beanie Jeanie, what is this Beanie Babies Craze? Is it a fad or will it last?

Through the magic and marketing genius of Ty Warner, the sole owner of Ty, Inc., Beanie Babies were introduced in 1993. With a reasonable $5 price tag and cuddly, adorable designs, they have taken the country by storm. In 1997, it was by far the most popular collectible and toy in the US.
Ty, Inc does not do any conventional advertising except in their website at www.ty.com. Ty does promote their products creatively, such as with their baseball and basketball game promotion, with McDonald's Teenie Beanies and with their newest Beanie Babies Club.
The hundreds of independent websites, numerous books and magazines, Beanie Jeanie and zillions of Beanie fans across the US, Canada, Great Britain and Europe are fueling the fire and adding to the Beanie collecting fun and frenzy.
I think with the thousands of businesses established because of Beanie Babies, and the way Ty, Inc. continuously making wise business decisions, retiring and introducing new Beanies… Beanie Babies and their excitement are here to stay.

Beanie Jeanie Software (Note: Some of the answers will only make sense if you have the Beanie Jeanie software installed in your computer) :

Doodle/Strut: Beanie Jeanie, I think you forgot Doodle in your Checklist!

StrutI made an executive decision that Doodle is a variation of the current Strut. Following the rules I have shown in Beanie Jeanie - Variations, any two beanies with the same appearance, style#, poem, birthday are actually variations of the same Beanie. Therefore, in the Beanie Jeanie:
Brownie is a variation of Cubbie.
Doodle is a variation of Strut.
Nana is a variation of Bongo.
Pride is a variation of Maple.
Spook is a variation of Spooky.

Gender: Beanie Jeanie, how do you determine the gender of a Beanie Baby?

Erin    The gender is determined by the Beanie poem or how Ty refers that Beanie...whether it is a "He", "She", or neutral ("It"), like 1997 Teddy.
Erin has a neutral poem but Ty kept on speaking about Erin as a "She" in the Ty website...then Erin is a "She".
Legs' poem is also neutral, but in Lizzy's poem, it refers to Legs as a "He". So, Legs is a "He".
Strut/Doodle's poem is also neutral, but we all know that roosters are male.
Snowball the Snowman is questionable. Since there isn't such word (yet) as "Snowwoman" and its poem is gender neutral except for the words "snowman", so, Snowball is an "it". What do you think?

Prices: Beanie Jeanie, how accurate is your price list?

On the average, it is fairly accurate… but not exactly.
You must understand where the prices come from in the first place. In the Nuts, Flip or Radar page, when you see a Beanie and its price, you can find out how it is calculated by clicking on the Strut the rooster button. There, you will see all the websites, magazines and reference books with a high and a low price for that Beanie. Beanie Jeanie takes all those prices and averages them (for that period) and that averaged price is what is shown in the Nuts, etc. page.
For an entire collection, there will be some prices that are too high or too low. But on the average, your collection cost for any period is fairly accurate.
In the Radar page, you can actually override the Beanie Jeanie averaged price and put in your own. The most accurate and up to date prices from the Strut page will be either the Beaniemom price or the Beanie Jeanie price. Beaniemom website's price list by Becky Estenssoro and Becky Phillips is published every Thursday, and many Internet traders and show dealers swear by that price list.

References: Beanie Jeanie, where do you get all your information or do you just make it up?

Check out the Ears page in the Beanie Jeanie. I have all those reference materials and I actually read them all! I surf the Internet daily to check out the latest happening on Beanie Babies… when I am not developing this program and website, fixing computers, taking care of my sweetheart husband and adorable children, or zillions of other things!
Of all the reference books out there, the most comprehensive is Becky Phillips and Becky Estenssoro's "Beanie Mania." I used that book more than the others for reference.
Of all the Internet Beanie sites on the web today, I like Sara Nelson's www.beaniemom.com the most. It is comprehensive, full of facts and fun, and very up to date. I find Vicky Krupa's regular BeanieMom's Netletter News (link below) well-written, thorough and very enjoyable to read.

Variations: Beanie Jeanie, how did you organize the Ty Beanie Babies collection and determine which Beanie is a variation of another Beanie?

There are a lot of Beanie Babies and many variations of them today. Since Beanie Jeanie is a truly relational database (not a 2-D spreadsheet database), I can really organize the hundreds of Beanies in the most efficient and clear way. As of January 98, including Erin, Beanie Jeanie shows 136 Beanies that included 207 variations. Here are some of the rules I established for organizing the Ty     Beanie collection:
1. Any Beanie with the same appearance, style#, birthday and poem will be variations of the same Beanie (i.e. Nana is a variation of Bongo).

2. Any Beanie that has a first generation heart tag, and is not retired as of Jan 1, 98 will have a "Old Tag" variation (i.e. Chocolate has a "Current" and a "Old Tag" variation). This is to show the enormous price difference between an old tagged Beanie and a current one.

3. Oddity Beanies with an established history on other websites and price lists will have a variation of its own. (i.e. Libearty with an upside down flag is a variation of Libearty).
