Adoption Services
| Our staff is ready to help you and your family find the right pet - an animal who will spend the rest of his or her life with you. We are trained to ask key questions that will help you select an appropriate dog or cat. Do you live in a house or an apartment? How many hours are you away from home? Are there young children in the family? We will also assist people with their new pets after they go home. The Shelter will provide training, counseling, classes and general instructions for feeding, health care and grooming. We ask our adopters to fill out a short form which helps us get to know them. |

| We care about our animals and we follow up with a phone call to make sure all is well. Our Shelter is open Monday through Saturday 11:30am to 4:00pm, with extended hours on Thursday until 7:00pm. We are closed on Sundays. |
| Surrender Services: Since 1955, the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA has offered surrender services. Our doors are open for dogs, cats, birds and any other homeless animals. In the back of the shelter, there is a paddock available for farm animals. We have a 24 hour emergency service for any animal that is injured or in peril.
| Cruelty Investigation: The Columbia-Greene Humane Society is also chartered as an SPCA, which gives our investigators the authority to make arrests for any illegal mistreatment of animals. Our two part-time investigators are former police officers and are trained in animals cruelty. The shelter is open for cruelty complaints 24 hours a day.
| Humane Education: Representatives from the Shelter are available to offer programs at schools, daycare centers or adult facilities. Our curriculum is administered by a trained volunteer and assisted by staff employees. All children who attend our workshops are eligible for certificates.
| Dog Obedience: We are happy to offer the privilege of working with two of the most accomplished trainers in New York State. Charlene Marchand and Cathy Crawmer's dedication to the shelter is apparent by their generosity to Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA. Their classes, held at our facility, will not only make life better for you and your dog, but they are also entertaining and fun. Sign up early! These classes fill quickly. (Remember - you can teach an old dog new tricks!)
Low Cost Spay and Neuter: The Shelter offers options for low-cost sterilization programs to anyone in need. All the animals placed by CGHS are already spayed and neutered. However, in an attempt to reach out to the community we also offer special grants to those who apply through the Freda Friedland Gordon Spay/Neuter Fund. We also participate in Spay and Neuter Assistance Greene Animal Welfare Alliance (GAWA). For further information about these programs, please call 518-828-6044 for the Freda Gordon Fund and 518-945-3218 for GAWA.
