Soft Paws By Aaron Clause Happy Tails Chrissies Tail Nancy had a pet owners nightmare come true in April of 2000. Her Shepherd mix, Chrissie, had been taken from the porch of her house with no sign left but an empty collar. Nancy and her family launched an inter-county campaign to find Chrissie. A reward of $100.00 was offered for her return. By this September, Chrissie had been missing from her Saugerties home for five months with no sightings. Nancy was worried she would never see her pup again. Here at the shelter, it was business as usual until September 25th, when one of our staff members, Mara, noticed a peculiar similarity between one of our animal patrons and Nancys worn-out wanted poster for Chrissie on our office door. We called Nancy, who arrived promptly the next morning to take a look at our long shot that came in as a stray from Durham five months after the missing dog campaign. What followed was a tearful reuniting of Chrissie and Nancy, a spectacle that was worthy of any Sally Jessie Raphael episode. Our congratulations to both Nancy and Chrissie for never giving up hope! Harrys Tail Harry came to us as a stray on May 13th, and had no idea of the roller-coaster stay he would have with us. We thought our loveable Keeshond mix would love the home we found him the following August. All went well with his veterinary exams and adoption paperwork. However, when Harry arrived at his new home, his new brother, an Akita, beat Harry up and forced him to make a round trip back to us. Harrys temper was wearing thin; his kennel was making him hyper and agitated. It was only a matter of days before Harry went cage-crazy. Harrys adoption was sponsored, which made Harry free to a good home, and still no takers. His last chance was a trip up with me to Channel 10 News, where Steve Caporizzo offered a new family $100.00 in pet supplies and a grooming job to come and pick Harry up. Harry had about ten calls for his adoption the following morning Hallelujah! But it was Tom and Diane, a lovely couple who had two children, had lots of land, and had never heard Channel 10 News the night before, that got first dibs. Harry left us four months after his arrival to a fantastic home with $100.00 spending money for Milk Bones and chewy toys. Good luck, Harry, and thanks, Tom and Diane. Big Toms Tail You all know Big Tom from our last column the large, loveable F.I.V. positive kitty who needed special care to live out his life. Thanks to the column and a little word of mouth from our staff member, Judy, Big Tom has been united with Bill and Nora, a couple who had their F.I.V. positive cat for 18 years. Through their care, they found room for Big Tom amidst their other three cats. Were sure that Big Tom will be cared for with love for however many years he is with us, and the staff applauds Bill and Nora for giving Big Tom what he needed more than anything a chance. You can make a Happy Tail, too!
