Happy Tails II

SUNFLOWER (000-1032/Female/3 yrs./Retriever X) came in July 17th, 2000 as a stray from Catskill. She was adopted once, then returned after showing aggression to both cats and other dogs in her new home. She sat here from August 12th until Lisa came in and fell in love with our high-jumper almost five months later, January 2nd, 2001. Last we heard, Sunflower has been a wonderful companion to her new family (including the neighborhood dogs!) and has been busy showing all the love and affection she has to offer. Thanks, Lisa!

PLUMPY (00-999/Male/1 ½ yrs./Pitbull [AmStaff]) entered the shelter on July 10th, 2000. Being a challenging adoption candidate due to his apparent threatening demeanor toward dogs and cats (except for Sunflower, his girlfriend!), this Catskill stray was allowed on our main block because of his divine love for humans. That love was seen by Tammy and Dennis four months after Plumpy’s entrance here, November 22nd, 2000, and Plumpy finally got to set foot outside the gates. Plumpy is now adjusting beautifully in his new home (except for the stairs!), thanks to the open minds of Tammy and Dennis. Way to go, Plumpy!

GEORGE, a.k.a. MARRS (00-1537/Male/1 ½ yrs./Pitbull [AmStaff]), yet another stray from Catskill, was another hard adoption case. This time, however, it was not dog- and cat-aggression that caused difficulties, but George’s size and breed. He was a Schwartzenegger-like 70 pound Pitbull – enough to give many adopters second (and third) thoughts. But not Mikki, though, who bonded with George by way of a training leader. She re-named him Marrs, and now both are living very contentedly with their new partnership. Have fun, you two!

ATLAS (00-1686) and MARVIN, a.k.a. HERCULES (00-1687) (Brothers/both Male/1 yr./Great Dane X) were two very impressive dogs – how could they not be at 135 pounds and 125 pounds, respectively? They came here after an abuse case brought them in from Hudson. Here they stayed for a total of three weeks, and after Atlas made an appearance with Steve Caporizzo on Channel 10’s Pet Connection, both went home a few days later only an hour apart to two different owners – Atlas to Lyn and David, and Marvin (now Hercules) to Tom and MariaElena. The new owners met, too, and gave each other contact information so they could trade the gossip about how our “Big Brothers” were doing. Good luck, ladies and gents – that’s a lot of dog!

TIGER (99-1303/Male/2 yrs./Orange DSH) had been returned to us a couple of times since his original visit in 1999. The previous adopters’ claims of his aggressive tendencies were soon squelched not only when Tiger accepted all of the ten other cats in the free-roaming room where he stayed here, but also when he earned the “Best With Dogs” award for his ability to get along with even cat-aggressive canines. His new home actually came as a by-product of another intended adoption; Rita was here initially to adopt a dog and fell in love with Tiger’s love for humans, dogs, and cats alike. Best wishes to Rita and Tiger – oh, and Tiger, be on your best behavior around Rita’s parrot!

OREO (00-1126/Female/2 yrs./Blk&Wht DSH) was accused by her previous owner of not using the litter box. Strange – we never had a problem with that here. Not that we would blame her, however, having had her claws (the tips of her fingers) removed. So Oreo sat, reclusively, here in the shelter’s cat TV bed for five months until Lauramae came in looking for a quiet lap cat. It’s almost as if Oreo knew that it was going to be the perfect home. Oreo’s latest report shows her doing very well, no problems. Congratulations, Oreo and Lauramae!

BELINDA (00-951/Female/1 ½ yrs./Grey&Wht DSH) had come back twice since June 10, 2000 due to allergies in her new homes. She had spent a total of seven months in and out of the shelter, and seemed to always be overlooked by potential families. We made it a personal goal to show Belinda to every adopter we met (including some that wanted just dogs!), and it took until January 26, 2001 until the sales pitch stuck on Jenny. Belinda, having been released twice before, was RTG (ready-to-go!), and thus took Jenny home that same afternoon. This time it’s for good!

Thanks to all that have turned our hard-luck cases into walking miracles! For any questions about adoptions, donations, or any other information, don’t hesitate to call the shelter at (518) 828-6044. Or better yet, stop in – Rt. 66 1 ¼ miles south of the intersection with Rt. 9H in Hudson – and see what might be waiting here for you!
